Watch this terrifying, chart-topping horror film on Netflix

Netflix’s wide array of horror films boasts the inclusion of one of the greatest cinematic universes – The Conjuring universe. While Marvel and DC have reigned supreme with their convoluted timelines, filled with superheroes and supervillains, The Conjuring universe – started in 2013 by James Wan’s The Conjuring – continues to be one of the most terrifying and creepy film franchises with eight movies under its banner.

The eight films under the supernatural horror franchise include The Conjuring (2013), Anabelle (2014), The Conjuring 2 (2016), Annabelle: Creation (2017), The Nun (2018), The Curse of La Llorona (2019), Anabelle Comes Home (2019) and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)

The future films include The Crooked Man and an untitled The Nun sequel, whose dates have not yet been announced.

Helmed by James Wan and a legion of other acclaimed horror filmmakers, the films have had a massive impact on popular culture, especially Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson’s portrayal of the famous demonologists Lorraine and Ed Warren, garnering quite a cult-like following.

Wan and his team have explored the genre of horror and its sub-genres thoroughly, presenting an eerie and sinister film franchise that has also become the second highest-grossing horror franchise in the history of cinema, after Godzilla

One such film from the franchise has garnered the attention of fans yet again and has consistently topped the Most Watched Films chart on Netflix globally, jumping ahead of the streamer’s original content. This comes days after the Netflix series Archive 81 became one of the streamer’s biggest horror hits.

Although it is the fourth film in the franchise, the 2017 film, Annabelle: Creation is the earliest according to chronology and serves as a prequel to Annabelle as it explores the origin story of the spooky, demonic doll.

Although Annabelle was severely criticised, this David F. Sandberg film, produced by Wan and Peter Safran, was well-received by fans due to its extremely spooky and terrifying premise involving a toymaker and a demonic spirit that found a nest in the creepy-looking doll’s inanimate body. Annabelle: Creation had admittedly led to many viewers spending sleepless nights, afraid of waking up with the doll staring back at them with an ominous smirk.

Some of the films from the universe, namely The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2 and more are also streaming on Netflix.
