Watch this Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara crime thriller before it leaves Netflix next month

Just when Netflix gives us something to get excited about, it goes and ruins the mood by taking away something equally precious, and this time it’s happening to David Fincher. Netflix just got Brad Pitt coming back as Cliff Booth in Fincher’s The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, which is lovely news for anyone who enjoyed Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

But while we’re getting excited about that, it decided to bin Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Brilliant. Give us something to look forward to, then within seconds snatch one of his best thrillers off the shelf. The 2011 film leaves Netflix in the US on November 15th, so if you have been meaning to watch it, now’s the time.

And don’t go thinking you’ll have this mystery solved halfway through, because there’s a lot more going on than you’d expect. Daniel Craig plays Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist whose career has gone a little south, only to land himself an even bigger headache when a wealthy old bloke called Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer) hires him to investigate his niece Harriet’s disappearance forty years ago.

Now, you’d think someone would’ve got to the bottom of it by now, wouldn’t you? But the more Blomkvist digs into the Vanger family’s past, the dodgier things get.

And then you’ve got Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander, a brilliant hacker who’s got absolutely no time for anyone’s rubbish, and once she teams up with Blomkvist to crack the case, things get even more interesting. Now, Daniel Craig did a brilliant job playing a journalist who’s already had enough grief for one lifetime, but blimey, Mara really steals the show here. She even got herself an Oscar nomination for the role. It happens rarely that someone overshadows Craig.

And you’ve got to hand it to Fincher, because the man really knows how to make a place feel downright creepy. He’s taken the freezing Swedish countryside and made it look even nastier, with everyone acting a bit shifty and those massive family houses looking like somewhere you’d rather not spend the night.

Now, it’s more than two hours long, which is a fair old commitment when you’ve only just managed to choose something on Netflix in the first place. And no, it isn’t exactly happy viewing, unless your idea of relaxing involves suspecting absolutely everyone. But once the mystery gets going, you’ll probably forget you were planning an early night.

So catch The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo before November 15th. Netflix can parade Brad Pitt around all it likes, but getting rid of this one still feels like a bad deal.
