Netflix has recently released the first trailer for their new docu-series, Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE. The series will follow the girl group KATSEYE and discuss the process involved in them becoming a girl group.
The year-long process of creating KATSEYE will be chronicled in detail. The K-pop group notoriously underwent an intense trainee system before they were formally put together. According to Netflix, the series will be eye-opening as it will give viewers “Unprecedented access” to KATSEYE’s “journey to global stardom.”
In the trailer’s opening few seconds, we see a choreographer talking to the group, saying, “You’re already good; I need you to be better.” Later, the commentator announces, “The people that created BTS have this vision to take the ‘K’ out of K-pop and make it global.”
You can already listen to the girl group, as they made their official debut in June with the track ‘Debut’. They have continued releasing music since, as in July, they brought out ‘Touch’. Both of these tracks will appear on the group’s debut EP, SIS (Soft Is Strong), which will be released on August 16th, a few days before the series is set to premiere.
KATSEYE is a K-pop group consisting of six members: Manon, Sophia, Lara, Megan, Daniela, and Yoonchae. They were initially put together thanks to the YouTube reality competition The Debut: Dream Academy. The series initially ran for 12 weeks and followed 20 contestants as they competed to secure their place in the winning group.
There is no denying that each band member went through a hard time throughout their audition process; however, Manon confirms that she thinks it made her a better performer. In an interview with NME, she said that though she experienced “Hard times,” it was “Always super worth it.” Manon also said, “I had so much fun – and still do – and was really set in my decision of becoming an artist.”
The series will undoubtedly prove incredibly popular, given the rise of K-pop as a genre in recent years and the fact it doesn’t seem to be losing any momentum. The combination of likeable bands, eccentric dance moves, and upbeat, catchy music is enough to keep people hooked as bands are now playing Glastonbury, headlining Hyde Park and generally going global. It remains to be seen whether KATSEYE will add to that list of global K-pop megastars, but we will have a better idea once the documentary comes out towards the end of August.
