While fans of Zack Snyder anticipated the filmmaker’s venture into the realm of the next major space opera with Rebel Moon, it seems that may not be the direction he is taking after all.
Released earlier this month, Netflix’s Rebel Moon has been a huge disappointment. What can only be described as a soulless spectacle, the movie is symptomatic of a lot of things modern big-budget filmmaking gets wrong.
WhiIe talking to Wired about streaming releases, Snyder said: “It’s a different sort of vibe. On the streamer, though, you have to be careful with the opening of the movies because the barrier for entry is really easy. But also the barrier for leaving is very easy.”
The director added: “The balance is a lot more difficult on a streamer than in a theatre. I normally open the movies with a very hard opening, right? I want to break the barrier. All those movies, Watchmen, Dawn of the Dead, have very intense openings.”
Snyder explained: “I don’t know that having a movie in the theatres necessarily serves a streaming release. I think the verdict is out on that.”
This was just the beginning of what already looks like a disastrous franchise since Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver is set to be released in April, 2024. Even though it can be seen as an opportunity to salvage the saga, Part One doesn’t inspire a lot of hope.
