The first trailer has been released for Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi epic, Rebel Moon, from visionary director Zack Snyder. Officially titled Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire, this will be the first in a two-part “epic science-fantasy event” which has been, according to the director, “decades in the making.”
The second instalment will be called Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver, with a pencilled release date of sometime in 2024. An official synopsis reads: “When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora, a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival.”
“Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge.
As the shadow of an entire realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.” The synopsis and trailer follow an initial tease of the new series back in June. A Child of Fire is set for a December 2023 release.
The series, which has a reported combined budget of $166million, boasts a star-studded cast including Sofia Boutella as Kora, and Charlie Hunnam, Michiel Huisman, Djimon Hounsou, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Cleopatra Coleman, Jena Malone, Ed Skrein, Fra Fee and Anthony Hopkins, an android gaining sentience.
While promoting the film in London, Snyder, who also co-wrote the screenplay, stated, “Everyone in this group of rebels is on a redemptive journey… they all have a dark past.” His wife and co-producer, Deborah Snyder, shared, “It’s amazing to work on an original IP… it’s been really fun for us.”
Although widely known for his work with DC on films like Man of Steel and the controversial and troubled production of Justice League, Snyder’s last original project was another Netflix project, 2021’s Army of the Dead.
