After years of performance, comedians often tend to lose their charm. However, Bill Murray has been basking in the iridescent glow of his success, comic timing and charm for decades now.
Besides being a brilliant comic, he has a knack for playing anti-heroes who are general cynics, weary of the world with wacky humour. He has also established his reputation of being a character actor by playing a wide variety of roles that range from his portrayal of the disillusioned actor Bob Harris in Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation to playing the talking cat, Garfield and many other parts.
On Netflix, a lot of Bill Murray classics, including Caddyshack, Stripes, and Osmosis Jones, are available for streaming.
Although a fan favourite, Ghostbusters is set to leave the streaming service in March 2022, much to the chagrin of fans. However, another Murray flick has been winning the hearts of Netflix users.
Directed by Theodore Melfi, the 2014 comedy-drama St. Vincent stars Bill Murray, Jaeden Martell, Melissa McCarthy, Naomi Watts and others in prominent roles and has been widely acclaimed for Murray’s indelible performance.
A part of Netflix’s Top 10 films in the US list, the film stars Murray as a stubborn and crude war veteran with a hedonistic lifestyle, named Vincent. The war vet becomes an unlikely mentor to his next-door neighbour’s son, Oliver, who is struggling to cope with his parent’s divorce.
Together, they forge an unusual friendship where they find the best in each other and derive the will to survive from one another. Soon, the adolescent nominates the old man to make him an official saint in his school and the town to show the goodness he has within his heart.
Underrated and often ignored, the film is a nice balance between sentimentality and humour and records one of the best Bill Murray performances since Lost in Translation.
