Watch the 1990s rom-com classic before it leaves Netflix next week
As much as viewers love the legacy of the Netflix original productions, one of the streamer’s biggest draws is its collection of licensed non-originals, especially the ones that send them back in time.
But what if they’re soon forced to race against time to catch up with an unforgettable 1990s classic, Four Weddings and a Funeral? Well, there’s actually no what-ifs; time is seriously running out to tune into the old Hollywood favourite.
Scheduled to leave Netflix shelves on September 15th, alongside a bunch of other removals on the movies front, including Elena, Harley & Katya, and Terror Comes Knocking: The Marcela Borges Story, that leaves streamers less than a week to tune into the 1994 rom-com, Four Weddings and a Funeral, starring Hugh Grant.
Directed by Mike Newell and written by Richard Curtis, the heartfelt romantic comedy follows Charles, a charming bachelor and his tight-knit group of friends as they navigate romance, commitment, and loss over five life-altering social events: four weddings and a funeral.
The film originally became a watershed moment for the genre, blending witty, self-deprecating humour and authentic awkwardness into a tale of love and life. While it was produced on a modest budget of an estimated $4.4million, Four Weddings and a Funeral went on to gross a whopping $245million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing British film at the time.
Although the rom-com holds serious critical weight, despite the time passed, that doesn’t change the fact that viewers are on the clock. For those curious, Four Weddings and a Funeral is leaving Netflix since the content licensing agreement has expired.
As is the case with most streaming platforms, they host other movies owned by other studios through licensing agreements for a specific timeframe. Once that window closes, the title leaves unless the contract is renewed, which, again, can depend on several metrics such as viewership numbers, licensing costs, or whether the original owner wants the movie back for its own platform.
