Watch Taylor Sheridan’s Oscar-nominated neo-Western before it leaves Netflix
Taylor Sheridan fans might have to pivot their focus from what’s leaving Netflix next week to the next month because a crucial Oscar-nominated neo-Western movie, Hell or High Water, is officially on the clock.
While in most cases, weekly reminders of Netflix removals suffice, not everyone might take today’s episode of what’s leaving the service well. But on the bright side, it leaves viewers plenty of time to catch up on Hell or High Water before it leaves Netflix on May 1st.
Written by Sheridan and directed by David Mackenzie, Hell or High Water is undoubtedly one of the landmark movies of the last century, which blends the elements of a pulse-pounding heist thriller with a nuanced character-driven drama. The film was nominated in four categories at the 89th Academy Awards – ‘Best Picture,’ ‘Best Original Screenplay,’ ‘Best Supporting Actor,’ and ‘Best Film Editing.’
The 2016 neo-Western crime drama follows the Howard brothers, Toby and Tanner, who pull off heists at branches of the Texas Midlands Bank to save their family ranch from foreclosure. Although the entire thing is planned out, the brothers are driven by opposite motivations.
Toby, a divorced father, just dreams of a better future for his sons and does things out of despair, but Tanner is a reckless ex-convict who likes to raise eyebrows and, of course, invite unnecessary trouble. Sheridan’s screenplay is incredibly smart in conveying not just the “how” of the bank robberies, but also the “why.”
As for those curious about why Hell or High Water is leaving Netflix, well, it most likely all boils down to the same old limitations of licensing agreements.
Since Netflix doesn’t really own Hell or High Water, the streamer essentially rents it from the studio for a limited time. And now that the contract is ending, it understandably puts Sheridan fans in a tough spot.
Then again, with more than two weeks left until the removal, there’s no room for regret. Especially if you’ve seen Sicario or Wind River before, make the most of this reminder and sneak it into your watchlists already.
Lastly, for those who have been saving Hell or High Water for a later watch on Netflix, hurry up; you’re running out of time.
