Watch the brand new trailer for the horror series '1899' from the makers of 'Dark'

The hotly anticipated horror series 1899 has received its very first trailer ahead of its release shortly after Halloween 2022.

Starring Anton Lesser, Emily Beecham, Mathilde Ollivier, Aneurin Barnard, Alexandre Willaume and Andreas Pietschmann, the series follows a boatful of multinational immigrants travelling from the old continent to the new who encounter a nightmarish riddle aboard a second ship adrift on the open sea. A curious historical drama that teems with a foreboding horror tone, it’s a shame the series doesn’t drop in time for the spooky season of October.

The series comes with much fanfare too, being the follow-up to the German series Dark, with both shows being created by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar. Attracting a global audience back in 2017, Dark achieved critical acclaim and was also understood to be a significant ratings hit for the streaming service who has always been tight-lipped about the specifics of its viewership scores.

Telling a distinctively European story, Friese told Deadline back in 2021, “The whole European angle was very important for us, not only story wise but also the way we were going to produce it”.

Continuing, he adds, “It really had to be a European collaboration, not just cast but also crew. We felt that with the past years of Europe being on the decline, we wanted to give a counterpoint to Brexit, and to nationalism rising in different countries, to go back to that idea of Europe and Europeans working and creating together”.
