Watch Netflix’s official teaser for Guillermo del Toro’s 'Pinocchio'

Guillermo del Toro is no stranger to directing macabre fantasy flicks with the supernatural elements. Following his groundbreaking success with works like The Shape of the Water, Pan’s Labyrinth, Crimson Peak and more, del Toro is coming back with the Netflix Original film Pinocchio; the official teaser has now been released by the streaming service.

The director is famous for his films being a perfect synthesis of realism within the darker side of fairytales. Pinocchio is said to be his “dream project” since 2008, and the filmmaker has used the animated medium as he thinks that it is  “the ideal medium to retell this classic story in a completely new way.”

Talking about their upcoming partnership, he had expressed his gratitude for the “continuous support” from the streaming service in helping put together the film. While we all know the story of Pinocchio, del Toro has decided to add his creative ingenuity to the stop-motion musical that will add a dark twist to Carlo Collodi’s original tale.

Along with Mark Gustafson, del Toro is set to take us on an adventure in his grim world of amusement and horror that is set in Mussolini’s Fascist Italy. It will follow the bizarre journey of a wooden puppet as it comes to life under the influence of magic and struggles to be a perfect son to his father while annoying those near him with his troublemaking antics.

This journey of love and discipline will feature a brilliant ensemble cast, including Gregory Mann, David Bradley, Ewan McGregor, Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz, Cate Blanchett, Finn Wolfhard, Ron Pearlman etc.

The teaser sees McGregor as the Talking Cricket, Sebastian, laying the foundation for Pinocchio’s exquisite and extraordinary story that nobody knows, except himself as he has literally resided in the “boy’s heart”.

Set to premiere in December 2022, watch the official teaser below:
