Watch ‘London Has Fallen’ before it leaves Netflix this week
Netflix has been a place for quality content for years. The best part is it keeps bringing shows and films to our screens so often that we forget that he also takes. Every month, the platform cycles through its library and says goodbye to familiar titles.
This week, it is bidding farewell to one of the loudest, most unapologetic action sequels of the 2010s, which is on the chopping block. It’s the 2016 film London Has Fallen and is also the second entry in the Gerard Butler-led franchise. Unfortunately, it leaves Netflix on September 13th, and that gives you only a few days to stream it before it disappears.
London Has Fallen is a sequel to Olympus Has Fallen. The film once again sees Butler in full tough-guy mode as Secret Service agent Mike Banning. Aaron Eckhart has returned as President Benjamin Asher, with Morgan Freeman stepping in as Vice President Allan Trumbull.
The setup of the film is a pure popcorn spectacle. World leaders have converged in London for a state funeral, but it’s all for moments before the city becomes the stage for a brutal terrorist attack. You see landmarks falling and crowds going into panic mode, and that’s when our hero, Banning, is left to fight his way through the carnage to protect the President.
While London Has Fallen divided critics on release, it struck a nerve with audiences who wanted pure, unfiltered action. It went on to gross more than $200 million worldwide and proved that the “Has Fallen” series had staying power. So much so that it eventually spawned a third film we today know as Angel Has Fallen.
Why people like the films of this series is because they make a straightforward promise. You come for explosions, gunfights, and Gerard Butler, and they give you exactly that.
It is also a time capsule of a certain kind of action cinema. When this film was first released, the box office was full of films dominated by superhero franchises. Watching it leave Netflix feels like the end of that era. Today we have movies with better CGI and action sequences, but they can never beat the charm of an old-school action thriller, which somehow felt more realistic with fewer graphics.
Sadly, it is not the only movie leaving Netflix. The streamer has been making big changes to its line-up this September, with over 40 new films added and several older titles being cycled out. London Has Fallen stands out as one of the more noticeable departures, and this is your chance to stream it as soon as possible. Especially for those looking for a weekend watch that asks for nothing but your full attention and maybe a big bowl of popcorn, this film is your answer.
If you missed it the first time, or if you just want to relive one of Gerard Butler’s most adventurous missions, now is the moment.
