Vince McMahon slams new Netflix documentary
Ahead of its widespread release on September 25th, former CEO of the WWE, Vince McMahon has taken the opportunity to distance himself from the upcoming documentary series Mr. McMahon. In a rare social media post, McMahon slammed the Netflix production for deliberately “distort the viewers’ perception” of him.
The streaming service has had a documentary about McMahon in the works for many years at this point and has had to consistently adapt and update its plans as multiple misconduct allegations against McMahon came to light. When Netflix unveiled the trailer for the six-part documentary series, there was some concern over how the production would tackle McMahon’s various controversies and allegations.
Seemingly, McMahon is not particularly happy with how those aspects of his life have been covered by the documentary – one of the various documentaries about controversial figures that Netflix is currently producing.
Writing on X, formerly Twitter, the former CEO shared a statement. “I don’t regret participating in this Netflix documentary,” he wrote, “The producers had an opportunity to tell an objective story about my life and the incredible business I built, which were equally filled with excitement, drama, fun, and a fair amount of controversy and life lessons.”
“Unfortunately,” the statement continued, “based on an early partial cut I’ve seen, this doc falls short and takes the predictable path of conflating the ‘Mr McMahon’ character with my true self, Vince. The title and promos alone make that evident.” According to McMahon, “A lot has been misrepresented or left out entirely in an effort to leave viewers intentionally confused. The producers use typical editing tricks with out-of-context footage and dated soundbites, etc., to distort the viewers’ perception and support a deceptive narrative.”
Going back to the 1980s, McMahon has been the subject of various different allegations of sexual assault, abuse, harassment and, in one case, sex trafficking. In recent years, McMahon was under investigation for the payment of $3 million in hush money to somebody that he had allegedly had an affair with, along with various other payments to the victims of sexual misconduct.
These allegations caused McMahon to step down from the CEO position of WWE. Although he would soon return, fresh sexual assault allegations and a federal investigation into his actions caused the CEO to leave the organisation and its parent company, TKO, for good earlier in 2024. The new series is set to tackle these allegations and controversies within the context of McMahon’s involvement in WWE, whether the figure himself likes it or not.
McMahon denies the accusations made against him.
