‘Untamed’ ending explained: Who is Jane Doe?
Untamed really lives by its name. The Netflix series begins with two random trekkers stumbling upon a dead body, quite unoriginal, many would say. But what’s original is how and where they discover the body – mid-trekking and free-falling. The clamours and chaos reek of the main character energy, until a screeching silence pierces to introduce the star of the show, Federal Agent Turner – almost ready to let go but not quite yet.
The miniseries takes place in the untamed wilderness of the Yosemite National Park, which holds ground-shaking secrets close to its heart. Untamed doesn’t play with death; it shapes with it. The show begins with the mysterious death of Jane Doe, an unidentified woman who fell from the top of El Capitan. And Turner is assigned to the case just when he thought it was time for him to join his son in the afterlife.
When the phone call breaks the silence, Turner delays his bid. But little does he know, this case will shake up everything, connecting an uncanny dot to his own traumatic past. The first time viewers see Turner, not much is known about his tragedy, but the suffering is palpable.
Jane Doe’s investigation, however, becomes a turning point, bringing closure to his personal life and the deceased, who remains a mystery until the end of the show. But in case you still feel lost in the rawness of Yosemite’s depths, we’ve got you covered.
Who is Jane Doe?
The questions around the identity of Jane Doe trouble viewers and the town of Yosemite alike. But thanks to Naya Vasquez, a former LAPD officer-turned-rookie-park-ranger, the identity is out in the clear, courtesy of an existing Jane Doe file in Yosemite’s records. Jane Doe is actually Lucy Cook, a youngster who went missing from the park in 2012. Interestingly, Agent Turner was assigned the case back then, and as fate has it, it all comes back to him.
The missing case was a trigger point for Turner, whose son disappeared and was murdered in the woods five years ago. The concept of a broken family is at the heart of Untamed. But it’s not just blood that defines family. Take Paul Souter, for instance. Although Turner often gives in to trouble, Paul tries to be the guardian angel. That’s well, until he doesn’t.
With Jane Doe’s identity out of the bag, Turner’s probe leads to unexpected revelations. Initially, many believe the violent scars on her body are caused by a predator. But when a bullet wound breaks the rhythm of investigation, it leaves everyone scratching their heads. Lucy Cook’s disappearance as a child entwines with the murder mystery currently at hand. And what worsens the case?
Years ago, the blame went to Lucy’s father, Rory, who was killed in a bar fight three years later. However, Rory wasn’t even Lucy’s biological father as is evident from the DNA results. While that brings everyone back to square one, with more questions than answers, who exactly killed Lucy?
Who killed Lucy Cook in Untamed?
We hate to break it to you, but despite the bloody cat-and-mouse chase, it’s not Shane Maguire. In the second last episode, it looks like all loose ends are tied when Turner is rescued and Shane is shot by Vasquez. But Untamed doesn’t let the audience get ahead of them. In the last episode, it’s revealed that the actual killer was Lucy’s real father, Paul Souter. Shocker? We get it.
Although Turner speculates something about a deal gone wrong, in an attempt to piece together Lucy’s life before her return to the park, he goes down the trails of her foster home in Nevada. Upon conversing with Faith Gibbs, the daughter of the foster family, he comes to learn Lucy was dropped off by a policeman who had promised to return.
Turner connects the dots to confront Paul, who reveals that have accidentally shot Lucy when she came back to extort money via blackmail. The threat of losing Paul’s family took him down the road. But he never intended to kill Lucy. In fact, it was a warning shot to get her attention that went awfully south.
