‘Unchosen’ ending explained: Does Rosie escape the cult? What happens to Adam?

Unchosen on Netflix highlights just how easy it is to embrace a cult when you constantly feel like a victim of political and financial instability. Although the transition may not happen consciously or by choice, when you give the institution of fear the upper hand, freedom becomes a leverage and faith, the source of reason.

Created by Julie Gearey, the psychological thriller follows Rosie, a member of a reclusive church community, who lives with her husband Adam, a newly promoted elder at the Fellowship of the Divine, and their daughter, Grace.

While Rosie and Adam don’t share an emotional wavelength, a blissful marriage, or a healthy sexual relationship, they’re decent co-parents. And it’s only when she runs into Sam, the escaped convict, who saves Grace from drowning, that she finally begins questioning the cult to which she has dedicated her life.

Then again, Sam is not exactly a saint to begin with, and his web of lies and manipulation finally comes to the forefront in the series finale, but does that leave any scope for Rosie to escape? Also, what really happens to Adam? Let’s find out.

Does Rosie escape the Fellowship of the Divine in Unchosen?

Sam’s grip on the members of the Fellowship of the Divine, including Rosie and Adam, is undeniably strong. Yet, once she truly realises his true face in the Unchosen finale, she decides to confide in Adam about her infidelity, ultimately telling him about her decision to take their child and leave. Although he’s overcome with heartbreak, Rosie’s reminder of his assault opens his eyes to how he has actually wronged her persistently.

Also, having witnessed Sam’s exploitations first-hand, Adam agrees, and they drive off. Midway, they, however, pause due to a storm-driven halt, and there they meet Sam, desperate for a confrontation. Not long after, the argument turns into a physical brawl, leading to him overpowering Adam and running after Rosie. While she initially tries to reason with him, it results in him trying to drown her. However, something about her words hits him, and he decides to let her go.

Rosie and Grace survive the nightmare and escape the cult. In fact, one of the final moments reveals that the mother-daughter duo ended up at Mrs Phillips’s door, who had managed to flee the cult’s toxic grasp earlier.

As for Adam, Unchosen chooses to draw the curtains without a certain answer. After letting Rosie and Grace leave, Sam returned to Adam, only to find him pointing a gun at his head, but instead of losing it, he hands over a phone with a video of Adam and himself engaging in oral sex. “All I had to do was manipulate you, Adam, because that’s who you are,” Sam tells him.

In the final scenes, Adam isn’t found in the cult’s congregation. So, it’s safe to assume that he either left the scene for good or Sam had something to do with it.
