The truth behind ‘Untold: The Murder of Air McNair’
True crime is always among the most consistently popular genres Netflix offers to its subscribers, and the latest episode of the ongoing series Untold continues the recurring theme of anything revolving around death and murder becoming an instant hit among audiences worldwide.
What gives the newest chapter even more weight is that it focuses on a well-known sportsman, with Steve ‘Air’ McNair spending 13 seasons in the NFL after being selected third in the 1995 draft. He died on July 4th, 2009, at the age of only 36, with the circumstances surrounding his demise opening the door to a number of theories and conspiracies.
McNair was discovered dead by the police at a home rented under his name, with four bullet wounds in his body. Next to him was the body of 20-year-old Sahel ‘Jenni’ Kazemi, who had one gunshot wound to the head. It was the former NFL star’s friend Robert Gaddy who made the initial call to the cops, with the investigation appearing to be fairly cut-and-dried.
The Nashville police ruled that it was a murder-suicide, with Kazemi gunning down McNair before turning the gun on herself, with the weapon found underneath her body and gunshot residue being discovered on her hand. Although he was married with three children, the authorities revealed McNair was having an affair with the waitress, which led the cops to a natural conclusion.
Police interviews with Kazemi’s friends, family members, and colleagues involve them sharing her belief that she and McNair were going to start a life together, with the football favourite having no issues being spotted out in public with her despite his married status and he allegedly told Kazemi he was planning to divorce his wife.
However, the investigation also discovered through phone records that McNair was seeing many more women than just his wife and Kazemi, with the police stating she purchased the gun that killed them both hours after being cited for driving under the influence and less than 48 hours before their deaths.
It was confirmed she bought it from convicted felon and parolee Adrian Gilliam, which is where some doubt ended up being cast. A private investigator pointed out that Gilliam said he didn’t know Kazemi’s name when he sold her the weapon, only for more than 200 communications between them to be discovered in the three weeks leading up to the murder-suicide.
It’s inconclusive at best, but Vincent Hill even alleged that Gaddy may have been involved due to a financial disagreement between himself and McNair. Gaddy referred to the claims made as “absolutely disgusting,” but that seed of doubt is enough to have Netflix users raising questions about what really happened between Kazemi and McNair.
