Tom Cruise has shimmied into the Netflix top ten again

Tom Cruise’s latest high-flying adventure, Top Gun: Maverick, has soared into the seventh spot on Netflix’s global top ten film list.

The film has made it to the top ten charts in as many as 25 countries, including India, Canada, and Australia. This marks the latest triumph for the iconic action star, whose enduring appeal continues to draw audiences worldwide.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski and penned by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie, Top Gun: Maverick is the much-anticipated sequel to the 1986 classic Top Gun

Tom Cruise returns in the starring role as Maverick, the daring naval aviator with thirty years of service under his belt. The film revolves around Maverick’s journey as he confronts his past demons while training a group of elite TOPGUN graduates, including the son of his deceased best friend, for a high-profile mission.

The star-studded cast features Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, and the return of Val Kilmer as Iceman. The film’s development faced initial challenges, with a sequel announced in 2010, but progress stalled after the untimely death of director Tony Scott in 2012. Dedicated to Scott’s memory, the project resumed in 2017 under Joseph Kosinski’s direction.

Top Gun: Maverick went on to become the second-highest-grossing film of 2022, grossing $1.5billion worldwide. However, Cruise had once vouched he would not make a sequel to his ‘86 hit in fears that the film might end up glorifying war.

Speaking to The Guardian, Kosinski explained what changed for the star, “It’s a film about competition and friendship and sacrifice. It was never a film about war. We wanted to give people insight into a world and to experience what it’s like to ride in one of these machines. But the desire was to tell an emotive story about a guy in his 50s. The push was: what’s the audience feeling about that? We were pretty ruthless in making sure that we were always pushing that story, even in an action scene.”

Top Gun was a big enough hit that it boosted US Navy enlistment after its release.

Receiving accolades for Best Sound at the 95th Academy Awards and named one of the top-ten films of 2022 by the American Film Institute, Top Gun: Maverick continues to prove the enduring power of Cruise’s star appeal and the timeless allure of high-octane aerial action.

You can now stream the must-watch blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick right in your home on Netflix.
