Three true-crime documentaries to stream over the weekend
Evil Influencer: The Jodi Hildebrandt Story (Skye Borgman, 2025)
Netflix recently released a terrifying true-crime documentary, Evil Influencer: The Jodi Hildebrandt Story, directed by Skye Borgman, and it definitely deserves a place on your weekend watchlist. The Netflix documentary highlights the story of content creator Ruby Franke and family counsellor Jodi Hildebrandt, founder of the life-coaching company ConneXions, who teamed up and vlogged about the former’s life raising six children with her then husband on a YouTube channel called 8 Passengers.
But then unravelled a shocking true story of child abuse, sparking large-scale media unrest and leading to their eventual arrest. Evil Influencer: The Jodi Hildebrandt Story chronicles the rise of Hildebrandt in the church community, the investigation that followed after the initial discovery of child abuse, the subsequent media unrest and the sensationalisation through security camera footage. While Borgman has again and again shone light on the gritty world of true crime, the last of 2025 is undoubtedly an eye-opener.
Murder in Monaco (Hodges Usry, 2025)
In case you take an interest in history, Murder in Monaco is a gripping Netflix documentary that recounts the jaw-dropping true story of one of the wealthiest private bankers, Edmond Safra’s murder in 1999 at his palatial Monaco home. The true-crime documentary explores the shocking incident in which Safra lost his life, initially believed to be an accident.
But as the story unfolds, Murder in Monaco reveals a gritty, greed-driven cobweb of conspiracy, deception, and betrayal, involving two trusted employees in Safra’s proximity. The documentary, currently streaming on Netflix, follows the investigation and the trial, also highlighting the subsequent arrest of Safra’s chief of security, who was believed to be complicit.
The Perfect Neighbour (Geeta Gandbhir, 2025)
To end the true-crime binge, we recommend Geeta Gandbhir-directed The Perfect Neighbour, one of the most-talked-about documentaries of 2025. The pulse-pounding documentary recounts the shocking killing of Ajike Owens, who was shot and killed by her neighbour, Susan Lorincz, in Ocala, Florida, in June 2023.
The Perfect Neighbour is constructed in a chronological order with “limited narration” and told through pre-existing body camera footage. The documentary also follows the lead-up to the event, the incident itself, alongside its consequences, to reconstruct the goings-on which eventually escalated into the cold-blooded murder of Owens.
