Three Charlize Theron movies to stream after ‘Apex’

Apex has properly taken off, and it’s not a surprise now, is it? It was meant to happen, and huge credit for which goes to Charlize Theron. Everywhere you look, people are banging on about it on charts and socials. And fair play, it’s earned the attention.

As usual, Theron hasn’t missed a chance to impress us with her outstanding acting and stunts. She plays a woman who has to outrun a man chasing, nay, hunting her and all that in the wilderness.

You see, Apex is a survival thriller where Charlie’s character, Sasha, is out in the wild to try and forget about a close death. Instead, she gets stuck with a man named Ben who is chasing her in the wild. It all comes down to strategy and saving herself in the end.

And if that’s what you loved, we have three more movies of Charlize Theron on Netflix that you’ll love, each showing her range.

Three Charlize Theron movies to stream after Apex

Bombshell (Jay Roach, 2019)

Bombshell starts with Charlize Theron playing Megyn Kelly, one of several Fox News employees who bring forward allegations of sexual harassment against CEO Roger Ailes. The film follows multiple perspectives, including those of Gretchen Carlson and a fictional composite character, showing how the case develops within the network. Although the film was released in 2019, it is very much relevant in the current scenario as it focuses on workplace culture and power imbalance. But most importantly, it shows you the risks involved in speaking out.

Theron’s performance is closely modelled on Kelly’s real-life mannerisms and on-screen presence. Her physical transformation, which is achieved through detailed prosthetics, was widely noted and praised. The role earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Additionally, the cast includes big names like Margot Robbie, Nicole Kidman and John Lithgow.

Dark Places (Gilles Paquet-Brenner, 2015)

Based on the novel by Gillian Flynn, Dark Places centres on Libby Day, played by none other than Charlize Theron. As a child, Libby survived the murder of her family and testified against her brother, who was later convicted. Years on, she is contacted by a group obsessed with true crime who question the original verdict. Job done… or so it seemed.

Years later, Libby’s not exactly thriving. She is scraping by, still living off donations from people who followed the case; all in all, living a mundane life. Then she gets approached by this group of true crime enthusiasts who reckon her brother might actually be innocent, and that’s where things get interesting. She starts scraping the surfaces to check what happened, speaking to people from the past, and questioning her own memories at the same time. The story jumps between the present day and the night of the murders, filling in gaps bit by bit. One of Theron’s finest.

A Million Ways to Die in the West (Seth MacFarlane, 2014)

Alright, this movie is a completely different kettle of fish. A bit of a daft western, really, but that’s the point. Charlize Theron plays a woman named Anna, who rolls into this dusty little town and ends up crossing paths with Albert, a sheep farmer who is not exactly the brave sort.

Now, Albert’s just been dumped and can’t even win a simple duel, so Anna takes it upon herself to toughen him up a bit. She teaches him how to shoot, stand his ground, all that. Sounds straightforward, yeah? Not quite. Turns out, Anna’s married to a notorious outlaw, and when he shows up, things get chaotic. The humour in A Million Ways to Die in the West is very modern, despite the Old West setting. Loads of jokes about how dangerous and ridiculous life was back then. Theron plays it fairly straight compared to everyone else, which is awesome because it’s very rare to watch her in these roles.
