Three Anne Hathaway movies to watch after ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’

Oh, people have completely lost their minds over The Devil Wears Prada 2. Completely! The second those first clips started floating about online, everybody suddenly remembered just how obsessed they were with the original film.

And fair enough, because The Devil Wears Prada wasn’t merely a hit… that film had an entire generation wanting coffee orders barked at them by Meryl Streep as if they were Anne Hathaway. Iconic behaviour!

And our Andy Sachs, honestly… that girl went through absolute hell in the first film, and we all just sat there loving every second of it. Tell me you didn’t spend half the movie wondering, When will she get a break? Meanwhile, Miranda Priestly’s walking around freezing the air every time she enters a room, and Stanley Tucci’s there looking dead exhausted by everybody, and the fashion? Oh, stop it. It’s unreal.

And now the sequel is here, and people have absolutely lost the plot over it. Everybody is suddenly acting as if they work for Vogue. Full essays are getting written about Miranda walking through New York in sunglasses again. And Anne Hathaway? She knew exactly what she was doing, turning back up as Andy Sachs. One photo drops online, and the whole internet starts behaving feral. Nobody’s blaming her for that, though.

But that’s the thing with Anne Hathaway, isn’t it? She slips into any sort of film and somehow makes you obsessed with it. Romance, comedy, drama, glamorous rich-woman nonsense… From The Princess Diaries to Bride Wars, she can do all of it. So if The Devil Wears Prada 2 has sent you straight back into your Anne Hathaway phase again, these are three Netflix movies with her you need to watch.

Three Anne Hathaway movies to watch after The Devil Wears Prada 2

The Intern (Nancy Meyers, 2015)

One of Hathaway’s best, The Intern, is emotional every single time you watch it. Anne Hathaway serves fashion-business stress just like in The Devil Wears Prada, with Robert De Niro being charming for two hours straight. And yes, we know there’s barely anyone who hasn’t watched the film, but here goes the plot for those who haven’t touched this masterpiece yet. Anne Hathaway plays Jules Ostin, who runs this massive online fashion company in Brooklyn. Her entire life is hanging by a thread, with investors breathing down her neck and the startup staff needing constant attention. And to spice it up, there are marriage problems in the background.

Just then, like an angel, Ben arrives through this senior intern programme. At first, Jules barely notices him. Then, before long, he becomes the only person around her who isn’t asking for anything. And Anne’s brilliant in this because Jules never turns into that perfect “boss woman” type of character films usually love. She is snappy and exhausted, making mistakes constantly, and that makes her so relatable. Watch it if you haven’t yet… there’s no chance you’ll hate it.

Love & Other Drugs (Edward Zwick, 2010)

Whew… Love & Other Drugs had everybody obsessed when it came out, and once you watch Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal together, you completely get why. The chemistry between them is ridiculous. Amazingly ridiculous! Here, Anne plays Maggie Murdock, who is a smart and funny woman who is fully committed to keeping people at arm’s length because she is living with Parkinson’s disease. Along comes Jamie Randall (Gyllenhaal), who is a pharmaceutical salesman by day and a serial flirt by night. He’s an absolute menace of a man, and thus begins a series of casual hookups turning into something else entirely.

Warning: this film is very steamy. Very. People spoke about those scenes for years afterwards because Anne and Jake felt quite convincing as lovers. But that doesn’t mean that the film does not have its emotional moments. Also, a little reminder that Anne got a Golden Globe nomination for this role because she absolutely walked away with the entire film. As she should/does.

Ocean’s 8 (Gary Ross, 2018)

You know what? Ocean’s 8 should be declared the most underrated film of the “Ocean’s” movies because it understood exactly what people wanted. Gorgeous women committing crimes in couture at the Met Gala is something you need to binge on a weekend. Ocean’s 8 is basically Sandra Bullock’s Debbie Ocean pulling together this massive jewellery heist with six other women, and it’s all centred around Anne Hathaway’s character Daphne Kluger, an actress wearing a Cartier necklace worth millions.

But can we please discuss Anne in this film for a second? Because she absolutely knew what sort of movie she was in and decided to have the time of her life with it. And she’s looked so gorgeous. However, don’t watch this film just for the plot or the wardrobe. Dear God. Every outfit is insane. You spend half the film admiring jewellery and the other half wishing you could behave that outrageously in public without consequences.
