Will Smith is a big name in the cinema industry. He has cemented his legacy with a legion of amusing films with equal amounts of humour, action and sometimes, heartwarming drama. From playing the talkative, wish-granting Genie in Aladdin to a spy in a suave suit in Men in Black and a doting father in the tear-jerking The Pursuit of Happyness, Smith has an extensive filmography.
One of his bonafide classic films is now streaming on Netflix. Although it was not a commercial success, the film has garnered the unhinged attention of Netflix viewers who have watched the movie for 11.84 million hours.
Released in 2018, Gemini Man has followed Netflix Originals on the top ten list, namely The Adam Project, Windfall, Black Crab, and Rescued by Ruby.
Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ang Lee, the action thriller stars Smith, Benedict Wong, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen etc. Written by David Benioff, Darren Lemke and Billy Ray, the film had been developing for nearly two decades.
Sith stars as an elite but jaded assassin on the verge of retirement. However, Brogan is soon pursued by an unknown killer who can predict his every move.
Soon, Brogan finds out that he is being chased by a clone of his younger self, forcing Brogan to find out the creator of the clone and figure out their motives. Smith called it “the most demanding [film] of my career” and discussed the “emotional and physical challenges of making this film”.
“Ang is pushing the limits to give people an experience in the movie theatre that you can’t get anywhere else,” he said.
Talking about the genre of the film, Smith said, “This is not only an action film but an exploration of what one’s younger self can ultimately teach one’s older self. I’m 50-years-old now, and the irony of becoming 23-year-old Junior in this film is that 23-year-old me wouldn’t have been ready for this experience or to take on this role. Our hope is that this story provides something for everyone — never before seen cinematic wizardry, nuanced, relatable characters and next-level action.”
Will Smith has been very vocal about the films of his career, calling Men in Black and The Pursuit of Happyness his best works and Wild Wild West “a thorn in [my] side.”
