Jennifer Lopez has got everyone talking thanks again to her latest Netflix hit, Office Romance. She plays Jackie Cruz, the powerful CEO of an airline who starts having a secret relationship with Daniel Blanchflower, the company’s newly hired British lawyer. The film came on Netflix in June 2026 and reminded everyone that JLo can still rock a rom-com if she is locked in.

But are we really going to pretend she has only just discovered she can do rom-coms? JLo has been charming audiences in these films for years, and back in 2001, she absolutely nailed it as Mary Fiore in The Wedding Planner.

Mary is one of San Francisco’s most in-demand wedding planners. She is very meticulous about her work and is brilliant at creating perfect days for everyone else, but when it comes to her own love life, it’s gathering dust.

Then she meets Steve Edison (Matthew McConaughey) after he saves her from a runaway dumpster. Yes, an actual runaway dumpster. Early-2000s rom-coms did not believe in normal meet-cutes. Nobody was just bumping into someone while reaching for the same loaf of bread. No, you had to nearly get wiped out by industrial rubbish before romance could begin, and you’ve got to respect it.

Mary and Steve spend this gorgeous evening together, chatting and dancing under the stars. Mary starts thinking that maybe, finally, life has thrown her a bone. Then she finds out Steve is engaged, and not just engaged to anyone, either. He is marrying Fran Donolly, one of Mary’s biggest clients. The groom. He’s the actual groom. Anyone would be absolutely fuming, wouldn’t you?

So now Mary has to organise Fran’s and Steve’s wedding while pretending she isn’t falling for him. Professionally, it’s a nightmare, and emotionally, it’s even worse. You’re watching Mary arrange flowers and smile politely while the man she likes is preparing to marry someone else.

At the same time, Mary’s dad, Salvatore, is trying to push her towards Massimo, an Italian childhood acquaintance who is sweet but living in a completely different reality from everyone around him. Massimo has basically decided they belong together, and nobody can convince him otherwise.

But the MVP of The Wedding Planner is still JLo. She makes Mary feel believable and, in all honesty, quite professional. She is successful and completely dependable. Everyone needs her; everyone trusts her. This woman can solve anybody’s problem. But when it comes to her own happiness, she hasn’t got a clue what to do. Feels like the story of most of us.

The film went on to make roughly $94.7 million worldwide, too, so clearly audiences were more than happy to watch her organise weddings while her personal life completely fell apart. And do you know Lopez and McConaughey weren’t even the original choices? Jennifer Love Hewitt and Brendan Fraser were attached at one point, while Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. were also considered. Then scheduling issues got in the way, and the roles eventually went to Lopez and McConaughey.

Yes, the story is predictable. Of course it is! You know there are going to be longing looks, questionable decisions and people refusing to have a reasonable conversation until the last possible minute. You also know there is going to be some sort of dramatic dash towards love, but that’s what we came for, isn’t it?
