‘The Wrath of Becky’, the 2023 movie inexplicably storming Netflix UK charts

You probably missed The Wrath of Becky when it released last year. Most people did. It arrived with little noise, no mainstream hype, and the kind of title that sounds more like a parody than a real film. It is the sequel to Becky, a 2020 indie action-thriller that quietly gained a cult following. Now, out of nowhere, The Wrath of Becky is sitting at number eight on Netflix UK’s most-watched list.

No one saw this coming. And that is what makes it interesting.

The first film introduced us to Becky, a 13-year-old girl who turns into a makeshift action hero when a group of violent intruders break into her family’s lake house. It was brutal, fast, and just strange enough to get noticed. The Wrath of Becky picks up two years later. Becky is now 16, living off the grid with her dog, trying to keep to herself. Of course, that does not last long.

This time around, the threat is a group of far-right extremists who invade her space. They take what matters most to her and set off a series of events that lead to a full-blown revenge mission. There is no slow build-up. Becky snaps into action. The traps come out. The kills get creative. And the film commits fully to its own wild tone.

Lulu Wilson returns as Becky, and she is the core of everything. Her performance balances feral energy with deadpan delivery. She is a teenage action lead who does not care about approval or validation. She just wants revenge, and nothing gets in her way. It is an oddly satisfying thing to watch.

The film itself is short, running under 90 minutes. It does not waste time trying to explain too much. There is just enough backstory to understand what is at stake, and then it moves. The violence is exaggerated. The humour is dark. It feels more like a live-action comic book than a traditional thriller.

What is most surprising is how quickly this film has found an audience on Netflix. It is not new. It is not widely known. But the title caught attention, the thumbnail sparked curiosity, and once people clicked play, they probably could not look away. The film is fast, intense, and strangely fun.

There is no emotional arc. No life lesson. No big twist. The Wrath of Becky is about rage and revenge. That is all it wants to be. And sometimes, that is more than enough.

The internet has always loved chaos. Streaming platforms are built to reward it. You do not need a big star or a viral campaign. Sometimes, all it takes is a girl with a grudge, a ridiculous title, and a few well-timed takedowns to start climbing the charts.

So here we are. A film that came and went in cinemas is suddenly in the UK’s Top 10. Maybe it is the right length. Maybe people are tired of slow dramas and need something violent and fast. Or maybe the algorithm just knew what kind of week it had been.

Whatever the reason, The Wrath of Becky is getting its moment. And Becky is not asking for permission.
