‘The Watcher’ Season 2 is finally happening: Here’s everything you need to know

Well, if you think about it, Netflix technically renewed The Watcher in 2022, which should have made a second season look like a matter of “when” rather than “if”, but four years of near-silence will do strange things to a promise. The longer nothing happened, the easier it became to assume the show might be another powerful potential getting the return ticket.

At some point, everybody assumed that Netflix was done with it, but then came the surprise nobody had expected: production on season two is underway, with Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale back as Nora and Dean, which means Netflix has not changed horses midstream.

The timing is a little sus, especially after The Beast in Me recently wriggled free of its own “limited series” batch and got another season, suggesting Netflix is not above reopening a closed book when the appetite is there. Also, it looks like with Ryan Murhpy’s winning streak on Netflix, the recent examples of which would be Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, Netflix has finally decided to bring this ghosted show to life.

So here we are, once again with the Brannocks living the same nightmare, and here is everything you need to know about it.

What will The Watcher Season 2 be about?

Netflix is keeping the important details under wraps, but one thing is for sure: season two will continue with the Brannocks after the first season’s deliberately unresolved ending.

Just to recap, season one ended with Dean becoming consumed by 657 Boulevard and returning to watch the house even after the family had moved on, while Nora followed him and watched from her car.

That final image did more than leave the door ajar… It suggested the mystery had burrowed into the marriage itself. Season two can now explore what happens when the threat doesn’t need to come in an envelope because the paranoia has already moved in.

Will Season 2 still be based on the real Watcher case?

Ummm, well, this is a bit awkward. The real case involving Derek and Maria Broaddus is still unsolved, and the couple never moved into the New Jersey house that inspired the series.

Season one already took considerable liberties with their story, so season two has even less factual road left to travel. The Broadduses eventually sold the property in 2019 at a loss, and no neat second chapter followed in real life.

In other words, Netflix is moving further into fiction now, which may prove useful given how much the first season had already changed the case.

Who is returning for Season 2?

Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale will return as Nora and Dean Brannock, while Isabel Gravitt is back as their daughter Ellie. Margo Martindale will also reprise her role as Mo, the nosy neighbour.

Netflix is yet to announce the complete cast, so expect more names as production moves along.

When will The Watcher Season 2 be released?

No release date has been announced yet, so there is little point in circling anything on the calendar. Netflix confirmed on October 2nd that season two is in production, and until filming progresses further, any premiere window would be little more than guesswork.
