The Truthers is a high-stakes psychological thriller on Netflix that keeps viewers on their toes throughout.

Released on July 24th, the Spanish mystery thriller titled Los creyentes follows Berlin-based DJ Ruth, who returns to her childhood hometown after several years when her mother dies under mysterious circumstances.

While she expects an uncomfortable reunion with her estranged father, Martín, what she discovers upon her arrival is far more concerning. Since retiring, Martín has grown extremely aggressive, reclusive, and consumed with dark conspiracy theories, resulting in Ruth growing increasingly suspicious about her father having a role in her mother’s sudden death.

Ruth also notices several inconsistencies in her mother’s final days’ behaviours, especially the voice note she left for her daughter the night before she died. Although the lines of reality and fiction continue to blur with each passing minute, the search for the truth is more layered than meets the eye. So, does Martín actually turn out to be the killer?

Is Martín Ruth’s killer in The Truthers?

Since we follow Ruth’s perspective in The Truthers from the outset, we’re directed to address the situation through her suspicions. Throughout the film, Martín seems somewhat trapped in a world of paranoia, which makes it difficult for viewers to believe whether he’s actually innocent or if he had something to do with his wife’s death.

But as it turns out, Martín was actually telling the truth the entire time. He didn’t kill his wife. However, his growing paranoia surrounding a particular conspiracy theory had him scheming a massive explosion inside a pharmaceutical company in their hometown in an attempt to save missing children, which had a role to play in this entire ordeal.

When Ruth’s mother found out about the plan, she grew desperately tense and turned to heavy drinking. The outcome was a tragic fall in the bathroom, which caused her mother’s death. The ultimate twist of The Truthers comes when Martín suspects his daughter of killing his wife and informs the police of his suspicion.
