‘The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson’: Where is Kaitlin Armstrong now?
The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson on Netflix revisits a true crime that sounds stranger than fiction. Subsequently, by the time the credits roll, viewers are left with countless questions, including the most burning one: where is Kaitlin Armstrong now?
But before we get there, for those new on the block, The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson is a Netflix documentary which recounts the story of Moriah Wilson, a prodigy cyclist whose dreams of reaching the top of the cycling world were cut short by a brutal murder.
The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson takes viewers through the highly publicised search for Moriah’s murderer and the trial that followed, which is set against emotional interviews with her family, friends, and colleagues. If you’ve already watched the documentary, you’re aware of Armstrong’s identity. But if you haven’t, this may contain spoilers, so tread carefully.
Born in the Midwest on November 21st, 1987, Armstrong was a passionate traveller and a certified yoga instructor in Indonesia. According to her ex-boyfriend’s friend Chris Tolley, it was only after meeting Colin Strickland that she took an interest in cycling, eventually participating in amateur-level races (via 48 Hours). But why is that important?
In May 2022, Armstrong allegedly killed Wilson due to bitterness, resentment, and jealousy over the latter’s relationship with her on-and-off boyfriend, also a professional cyclist, Strickland.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Strickland and Armstrong bought a house and moved in together, gradually opening up a trailer restoration business. Their relationship lasted three years before experiencing a brief separation in fall 2021. However, Strickland testified that they were often “on-again, off-again,” and that he was uncertain about their compatibility in the long run.
At the time of their split, Strickland was romantically involved with Wilson, albeit only for a week or so, as per his friend.
After his reconciliation with Armstrong, Strickland and Wilson were reportedly just on friendly terms. However, a friend of the former couple testified in court that Armstrong was driven by jealousy, recalling a conversation where she’d asked what Kaitlin would do if Strickland dated someone else seriously, to which she responded, “I would kill her.”
When Armstrong was under suspicion of Wilson’s killing, she escaped to Costa Rica, getting herself thousands of dollars’ worth of plastic surgery to allegedly avoid getting caught. However, she was finally arrested in June 2022 and convicted of first-degree murder in November of the following year. Armstrong was sentenced to 90 years of imprisonment, and she remains behind bars as of now, despite attempts to escape jail.
