The true story behind the new Amy Bradley Netflix documentary
True crime documentaries on Netflix are a universe of their own. Regardless of the ease of accessibility, the stories they tell often seem worlds apart. Configured in gruesome terror and blood-curdling mysteries, these documentaries shed light on those alleys where dark is the only colour palette. And one of the most spine-chilling tales that viewers cannot stop talking about is the Amy Bradley documentary on Netflix.
Amy Bradley’s enigmatic disappearance is the subject of Netflix’s new docu-series, Amy Bradley Is Missing. The missing case has been a topic of conversations and theories within the true crime world for decades now. Speculations surrounding reports of sightings and conjectures about sex trafficking and murder persist to date. However, no clear-cut answer has been given so far.
The Netflix documentary probes into the theories surrounding Amy Bradley’s disappearance, who was only 23 years old at the time of her vanishing. Amy Bradley Is Missing features never-seen-before interviews alongside new findings, highlighting the case that has dazed investigators for a long time now.
But the burning question is: what exactly happened to Bradley?
When did Amy Bradley go missing?
Amy Bradley reportedly went on a Royal Caribbean International cruise with her family in March 1998. Having just graduated, she was gearing up for a master’s degree in sports psychology. According to Amy Bradley Is Missing, the Netflix documentary, she adopted a dog and relocated to a new apartment before going on the seven-day cruise trip.
Bradley went partying with her brother Brad on March 23rd, 1998, at the Rhapsody of the Seas nightclub. She and her siblings eventually returned to the family suite. And Amy’s father recounted seeing his daughter on the cabin’s balcony, sleeping. But about 30 minutes into the sighting, she was nowhere to be found – the only thing left behind were her shoes.
Cruise director Kirk Detweiler recalls searching every pocket of the ten-deck, 1,000-foot-long ship in the docu-series. They even carried out a “Charlie drill” at nine in the morning. Following an hour of diligent search, the captain informed Amy’s family she was not on board the ship. Curaçao officials expected her body to wash up on the sea. However, it never really did. Despite conducting their “biggest search” ever, no trace was found, not even a piece of clothing.
Countless theories have sprang up in the years after Bradley’s disappearance. But the most famous is that she either fell overboard or jumped off. According to Tudum, the balcony where she was last seen was cleaned thoroughly before investigators conducted their search operation.
Amy Bradley Is Missing illuminates the various theories and multiple alleged sightings of her following her disappearance, including her encounter with Alister Douglas, an entertainer on the Rhapsody of the Seas during the trip. The Bradley family filed two lawsuits against Royal Caribbean in 1999, which were dismissed in 2000. But Amy Bradley is still missing and nowhere to be found.
