The streamer most recently revisited the true story behind the subject of the Netflix project amid renewed interest from streaming counterparts.

The Amanda Knox documentary on Netflix recounts a chilling incident from 2007 in Perugia, Italy, when the person in question turned up as the prime suspect in her roommate’s murder. The victim was a British exchange student, Meredith Kercher, who shared the room with two others, including Knox. The murder case garnered incredible public attention, and Knox was convicted of the murder with her ex-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito.

But both of them were innocent. The Netflix documentary sheds light on the infamous murder case, offering insights into the subsequent trials and investigations. It features interviews with both Knox and Sollecito.

Most recently, Hulu released a drama series, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, a scripted miniseries on the trials. So, if you’re planning to watch, it’s best to be prepared.

What happened to Amanda Knox?

The Amanda Knox documentary narrates the real story after the Perugia authorities found her guilty of Kercher’s murder. The incident dates back to 2007 when Knox returned home after a night out with her then-boyfriend, Sollecito, discovering the front door of the house ajar, with blood spilt all over the bathroom (via Tudum).

Knox was the one to call the police, who found Kercher’s dead body in the locked bathroom. Kercher was allegedly stabbed to death right there. The suspicion grew on Knox when the police reportedly observed that she was unmoved by the death. The authorities claimed that she had implicated herself and her employer, bar owner Patrick Lumumba, during her first interview, resulting in the three arrests alongside Sollecito on suspicion of murder.

Sollecito claimed to have forgotten whether Knox was with him the evening of the murder. However, Lumumba had an alibi, clearing him of the crime. Later on, the fingerprints of Rudy Guede, a notorious burglar, were found at the scene. He was taken into custody after Knox and Sollecito and was tried for the murder.

Knox and Sollecito were both convicted and sentenced to 26 and 25 years in 2009. But a year later, after a thorough review sparked by concerns of DNA evidence and police interviews, their case took a significant turn. They were both acquitted in 2011, and their names were finally cleared in 2015 when they were officially exonerated.

Who is interviewed in the Netflix documentary?

Besides Knox and Sollecito, the Amanda Knox documentary on Netflix features interviews with the Italian prosecutor, Giuliano Mignini, the reporter who broke the news, Nick Pisa, forensics experts, Dr Stefano Conti and Dr Carla Vecchiotti, Rudy’s attorney, Valter Biscotti, and the convicted in the Kercher case, Guede.

Where is Amanda Knox now?

She serves as an executive producer on The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox. Currently, she resides in Washington State with her family, consisting of her two children and her husband.
