The heartbreaking true story behind Netflix’s new documentary

An 18-year-old girl goes on a graduation holiday with her classmates and disappears without a trace, and her mother spends the next eighteen years searching for answers: that’s the nightmare Netflix is taking us through in Taken: Natalee Holloway.

What happened to Natalee Holloway in Aruba in May 2005 is even more heartbreaking than you might think. And the man who would eventually confess to killing her had the bloody audacity to demand $250,000 from her grieving mother in exchange for information about her missing daughter.

The upcoming three-episode documentary on Netflix on November 4th revisits the case through the eyes of Natalee’s mother, Beth Holloway, alongside investigators who spent years trying to piece together what happened.

But beneath all those headlines and eighteen years of unanswered questions is the story of a mother who did not stop looking for her little girl.

What happened to Natalee Holloway in Aruba?

Natalee was just 18 when she travelled from Alabama to Aruba in May 2005 to celebrate her high school graduation like any other normal teen. She had her whole life ahead of her, but on May 30th, she was seen leaving a nightclub with three young men, including 17-year-old Dutch national Joran van der Sloot. And that was the last anyone saw of her. She never returned to her hotel, and what was meant to be a holiday celebrating the end of school became a nightmare no family could’ve prepared for.

Search teams scoured the island, the disappearance made headlines across America, and Beth was left waiting for news of her daughter. Van der Sloot and two brothers who’d accompanied him were arrested but released without charges, and his changing accounts of Natalee’s final hours did little to help matters.

And the years kept passing. No Natalee, no remains, and no answers that could put an end to her family’s suffering. In 2012, she was declared dead, despite her body never being recovered.

But what happened in 2010 was enough to make anyone’s blood boil. Van der Sloot offered to reveal where Natalee’s remains were buried in exchange for $250,000. This absolute disgrace of a human received $25,100 and gave information he later admitted was worthless.

And as if the case hadn’t brought enough horror, on May 30th, 2010, exactly five years after Natalee vanished, van der Sloot murdered another young woman, 21-year-old Stephany Flores, in Peru. He was sentenced to 28 years in prison for her murder, while the Holloway family continued waiting for the truth about what happened in Aruba.

Then came October 2023, and after eighteen years, van der Sloot confessed to killing Natalee. He pleaded guilty to extortion and wire fraud in an American court and admitted to attacking her after she rejected his sexual advances before disposing of her body in the sea.

Van der Sloot received a 20-year US sentence for the financial crimes, not a murder conviction for Natalee’s death. And here is the part that makes the whole story so devastating: Natalee’s remains have never been found. Beth got the answers she’d fought for, but she never got to bring her daughter home.

And that’s what makes Netflix’s Taken: Natalee Holloway such a devastating story to revisit. For years, the world followed the investigation and the endless speculation about what happened that night in Aruba, but for Beth, this was never some great mystery to keep the public entertained. It was her daughter. An 18-year-old girl who’d gone away with her school friends to celebrate finishing school and was supposed to come home. It doesn’t get sadder than this.
