The Taylor Swift song you probably missed in ‘People We Meet on Vacation’
People We Meet on Vacation brought the season of love early on Netflix, and the audience didn’t seem to mind. And it also snuck a Taylor Swift song into its soundtrack that’s now made a swift return onto every playlist.
People We Meet on Vacation is the first screen adaptation of an Emily Henry novel, which tells the story of two unlikely best friends and travel buddies, Alex and Poppy.
The romantic comedy on Netflix unfolds in a non-linear manner, and when the film opens, Alex and Poppy are navigating a fallout following a complicated couple of years. It is at Alex’s brother David’s wedding in Spain, where they reunite, which sparks a series of romantic events. After light reconciliation, Alex invites Poppy to her brother’s rehearsal dinner.
Poppy arrives, a little anxious but still anticipating and hopeful. And People We Meet on Vacation plays a very clever move to highlight that mix of emotions with a Taylor Swift track that’s nothing less than an anthem, ‘august.’ The track carries the sequence as Poppy musters the courage to break the ice, with the lyrics enhancing each and every glance, realisation, yearning, unspoken feelings, and of course, nostalgia.
In a conversation with Tudum, the author, who also executive-produced the rom-com for Netflix, shed light on her choice, saying, “There was a lot of debate early on as to which Taylor Swift song we should pursue for the soundtrack. I remember [director] Brett [Haley] telling me it needed to be ‘august,’ and it hadn’t actually occurred to me how perfect that was.”
While nothing brightens a rom-com like a Taylor Swift track, when it comes to choice, the filmmaker did nail it.
Besides that, People We Meet on Vacation debuted right at the top of Netflix’s weekly most popular movies chart with a whopping 17.2million views in the week dated January 5th to January 11th and is the number one movie in 33 countries, including the US, Canada, Norway, Portugal, Greece, and Hungary, among others. Although that clearly underscores the buzz, what’s also a complete draw is its beautiful soundtrack.
Alongside Taylor Swift’s ‘august,’ People We Meet on Vacation features several other tracks that will force you to make room in your playlist. Starting from ‘Who Says’ by Dopamoon feat Batuk and ‘Forever Your Girl’ by Paula Abdul to ‘I Don’t Know What I Can Save You From’ by Kings of Inconvenience and ‘On the Lips’ by Frankie Cosmos, the rom-com is jampacked with tunes that hit hard.
So, if you’re still contemplating whether to watch, we hope this convinces you because there’s a lot more waiting for you in People We Meet on Vacation on Netflix.
