The Swedish murder mystery everyone's watching on Netflix

Make way, for we have a new murder mystery in town. It is trending everywhere because people cannot have enough of this Netflix thriller.

A Nearly Normal Family has become a sensation. Premiering on November 24th, 2023, in Sweden, this six-part miniseries has quickly become a must-watch for fans of suspenseful drama and crime fiction.

The series, originally titled En helt vanlig familj, is based on the best-selling 2019 novel of the same name by Swedish author M.T. Edvardsson. A Nearly Normal Family’s script is penned by Anna Platt and Hans Jörnlind.

The story revolves around the seemingly perfect lives of Adam and Ulrika Sandell (played by Björn Bengtsson and Lo Kauppi, respectively), who live in a polished suburban neighbourhood with their 19-year-old daughter, Stella (Alexandra Karlsson Tyrefors). However, their lives turn upside down when Stella is accused of murder and finds herself in police custody.

The story unfolds in the aftermath of the brutal stabbing of 32-year-old Christoffer Olsen(Christian Fandango Sundgren) in the Swedish city of Lund. The Sandell family is thrust into a whirlwind of chaos, with Stella’s arrest propelling her parents into desperate measures to shield her from the mounting accusations.

More than a murder mystery, A Nearly Normal Family is an exploration of the complexities that lie beneath the surface of an ostensibly ordinary life.

Directed by Per Hanefjord, known for his work on Hamilton and The Hidden Child, the series navigates through the different perspectives of its main characters. Speaking to Netflix, Hanefjord said, “From the first encounter with this story, I have appreciated that it really has something at heart. It raises complex issues, offers depth of character and all the while with engaging suspense. I am in awe of the actors, and I have that feeling of being part of something big when new film stars are born.”
