‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ will hit Netflix US in December 2023

2023 has been an interesting year for cinema so far, with several tentpole franchises crashing and burning at the box office, whilst newcomers, like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, thrive.

But, if you missed it in cinemas when it was released back in April, fear not because Nintendo’s Italian plumbers will be heading to Netflix relatively soon. We don’t want to get you too excited, though, as whilst it will certainly be heading to the platform in the US, it won’t be landing until December.

Released by Illumination Entertainment, the same minds behind the Despicable Me franchise, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been the unlikely success of 2023, earning $1.3 billion at the global box office.

With a voice cast that includes the likes of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan Michael Key, Seth Rogen, and Fred Armisen, the film, adapted from the popular video game series, tells the story of Mario and his brother Luigi who must save Princess Peach from the clutches of Bowser.

Fans were disappointed that the popular character Yoshi didn’t appear in the movie, however, the post-credit sequence suggests that the green dinosaur will star in the anticipated sequel.

Despite the lack of critical acclaim, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has proven to be a hit with fans and general audiences, with the film thought to be the first in a long line of Nintendo movie adaptations.
