The Spanish thriller on Netflix that will make you sweat: ‘Firebreak’
Netflix is rolling out content this month like there’s no tomorrow, which means you’ve got to make some room again on your watchlist for a fresh Spanish thriller, Firebreak.
Directed by David Victori, best known for his work in Sky Rojo, Firebreak follows the terrifying disappearance of an eight-year-old girl into the woods during a contentious family trip, which forces her frantic mother to go to unbelievable lengths to save her.
Firebreak, the sweaty thriller, currently streaming on Netflix, tells the story of Mara, who takes her eight-year-old daughter, Lide, along with her brother-in-law, Luis, his wife, Elena, and their son, Dani, to the family cabin to prepare it for selling after the death of her husband. This trip is their final chance to bid farewell to the place Mara’s husband cherished the most.
But Lide? She’s totally against the idea of selling the cabin, since it would mean another piece of her father lost. However, with Mara resolute with the idea of packing away every memory, Lide’s only consolation is that her mother promised to pay a visit to some of her father’s favourite places before they left for home. Yet, before that can happen, a wildfire erupts nearby, and everyone is ordered to evacuate.
After everything is packed inside the van, it dawns upon Mara that Lide has been missing. Struggling with a loss of direction, she calls the cops, who quickly launch a search into the woods. However, with the wildfire spreading fast, the search team eventually has to retreat with no information about Lide’s whereabouts.
Already coping with the loss of her husband, the situation leaves Mara unable to think straight. After all, she cannot lose the only person that matters in her life: Lide. So, desperate not to lose her just after the death of her father, Mara takes a risky decision: to avoid the evacuation orders and launch her own search for Lide through the smoke-filled forest.
Although Mara is ready to risk it all, even her own life, it takes her a while to realise that Lide’s disappearance is not an accident. There’s more to her vanishing than meets the eye, and it’s about time she confronts everything head-on, for the sake of survival, and of course, for the sake of her daughter.
While Firebreak only runs for an hour and 50 minutes, it promises to stay with you long after.
So, if you’re looking for a hard-hitting thriller that keeps you guessing, making you constantly read between the lines, you cannot miss Firebreak on Netflix.
