The shocking true story behind ‘Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea’
Amid the showbiz shower of July releases, Netflix is gearing up to release the highly anticipated documentary Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea, AKA La Derive: Cauchemar en mer, this week. But before it arrives, knocking on the door, it’s important to track down the origins of the story that still has the world in a chokehold after all this time.
Premiering July 10th, the upcoming Netflix original documentary revisits the tragic 2012 sinking of a luxury cruise liner, using exclusive archival footage and first-hand testimonies.
Directed by Janice Engel, Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea is an upcoming documentary that recounts the terrifying Costa Concordia disaster. On January 13th, 2012, the seven-year-old Costa Cruises vessel set sail on the Mediterranean Sea, carrying over 4,200 passengers. However, the massive ship sailed extremely close to Isola del Giglio to perform a sail-by-salute, misjudging the immediate consequence and ultimately hitting a rocky reef.
The collision caused the ship to list, subsequently slicing a massive hole, and it eventually sank partially. While the rescue drive spanning six hours safely anchored the majority of the passengers and crew ashore after a challenging evacuation mission made even more difficult by the one-sided incline, 32 people unfortunately died.
Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea details this nightmare-esque real-life story of maritime catastrophe, using never-before-seen footage and survivors’ testimonies. The survivors narrate tales of bravery, confusion, and unimaginable terror of not only confronting the most unexpected crisis head-on, but also of abandoning a luxury cruise liner in the dark, unpredictable ocean waters, not knowing what lies ahead.
The documentary provides exclusive new archives that show what exactly unfolded, how the humongous ship sank, and the frantic rescue operations that followed amidst mounting panic among passengers, who turned to leaping on the lifeboats and jumping into the cold water, driven by fear and despair.
Until now, the July catalogue of Netflix original documentaries has been busy spotlighting true-crimes involving the worst-reputed next-door neighbours and historical events that shaped and changed nations forever. With Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea, viewers are about to confront one of the most rattling maritime tragedies of recent memory that scarred thousands, physically and psychologically.
