The sexiest film according to science, now streaming on Netflix

In recent years, the exploration of sexuality in cinema has become as diverse as the human experience itself. From subtle glances to passionate embraces, the portrayal of intimacy on screen has long been a subject of fascination and debate. And Netflix is a treasure trove of films and series that examine and celebrate passion in its multiple forms. One such film in the streaming platform’s library is Basic Instinct.

This film has long held the title of the sexiest according to both popular opinion, and now, scientific analysis is none other than Basic Instinct. Whether you’re looking for a steamy mid-week romp with your Valentine or seeking solace in the company of cinematic intrigue, you can tune in regardless.

Online marketplace OnBuy conducted a survey to determine the sexiest film of all time. Utilising data from IMDB’s list of sexiest films and employing various metrics such as Google search volumes for sex scenes, kissing scenes, and nude scenes, as well as the inclusion of BDSM and group sex, OnBuy compiled a comprehensive ranking of the most seductive films ever made. And sitting proudly at the top of the list, with a score of 534 out of a possible 600, is none other than Basic Instinct, which is streaming on Netflix in a select few countries.

This 1992 thriller, directed by Paul Verhoeven, has cemented its place in cinematic history not only for its gripping murder mystery but also for one of the most notorious moments of movie nudity ever put to film. Completed by the iconic scene where Catherine Tramell, played by Sharon Stone, casually uncrosses her legs while being interrogated by the police, the movie is a classic.

The film boasts a total of six steamy sex scenes, each oozing with tension and desire. From the sizzling chemistry between Sharon Stone’s Catherine Tramell and Michael Douglas’ Detective Nick Curran to the palpable air of danger that permeates every frame, Basic Instinct does erotic storytelling well.

It’s important to recognise the distinction between fictional erotica and pure pornography. Unlike the latter, which often reduces human intimacy to mere physical acts, cinematic erotica delves into the complexities of desire, passion, and human connection.

There are other films that made it to the list, from Notes on a Scandal and Bound to Cruel Intentions and American Beauty. Some of these films happen to be available for streaming on Netflix.
