The sci-fi horror movie storming the Netflix charts: ‘Prometheus’

Although the peak of the most popular movies chart on Netflix looks the same as last week, once you scroll down a little, you’re most likely to get all distracted by the sci-fi horror movie rising through the ranks, Prometheus.

In the week from February 16th to February 22nd, Prometheus amassed 6.6million views, becoming the second-most-watched movie of the week. The 2012 movie, directed by Ridley Scott, is also currently the number one movie in 16 countries, including Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Greece, and Croatia, among others.

Packed with a star-studded ensemble featuring the likes of Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Noomi Rapace, and Charlize Theron, Prometheus is the fifth instalment of the Alien series, set in the late 21st century, which tells the story of the crew of the spaceship of the same name.

The sci-fi movie, currently streaming on Netflix, opens in 2089 when archaeologists Elizabeth Shaw and Charlie Holloway discover a star map in Scotland matching other ancient cultures, suggesting humans were engineered. So, the Weyland Corporation funds scientists to travel to the moon LV-223 on the USCSS Prometheus to meet humanity’s creators, AKA, the “Engineers.”

But on their journey, they soon realise that the Engineers manufactured a black liquid mutagen, a deadly biological weapon, intended to wipe out humanity instead, leading to a desperate fight for survival. However, if we reveal more, you’ll most probably miss out on the suspense if you haven’t watched already.

For those curious about the reason behind Prometheus’s sudden resurgence on charts, well, it’s safe to say that the Alien universe is currently experiencing a major renaissance period. Plus, with Netflix recently adding the 2012 title to its library across major territories in mid-February, it’s no wonder that the audience has found themselves glued to the screen ever since.

Moreover, considering Netflix’s algorithm prioritises new additions, new audience discovery always comes into play with algorithmic serendipity. Not to mention that it’s just as possible that the sci-fi trends on Netflix have created a feedback loop where more people have started watching the movie.

While Prometheus was a major box office hit, its impact has been no less on streaming. Although only time will tell whether the momentum will last, by the looks of it, Prometheus is here to stay and rule.

So, if you haven’t tuned into it already, watch Prometheus on Netflix now!
