‘The Rip’ ending explained: Who is the traitor?

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck recently reunited for a Netflix cause, the Joe Carnahan-directed action thriller, The Rip, and we know you’re still reeling from it.

The latest cop thriller on Netflix follows Lieutenant Dane Dumars’s Tactical Narcotics Team, which follows an anonymous tip to a local residence, only to discover $20million in cartel cash. Required by law to count the exact figure at the site of the seizure, the team has no option but to carry out their mission, especially since they’re under the FBI’s surveillance following the murder of their captain, Jackie Velez.

But just as the sun sets, the trust between the team members begins to fray. No one really knows who’s bad, who’s good, who’s corrupt, or who’s a traitor.

Although by the looks of it, the TNT members clearly have their hands tied, The Rip follows an unexpected operation to unmask a mole within the department, which leads to the revealing of the real traitor. So, in case you rushed with the movie, here’s the ultimate betrayer.

Who is the traitor?

The tension that builds throughout The Rip, Netflix’s latest action thriller, unfolds in various ways, including Dumars and Detective Sergeant JD Byrne literally locking horns, Byrne’s FBI agent brother Del suspecting Dumars in the wake of Velez’s murder, and the fact that Dumars has been behaving quite strangely by giving out a different number to each member of TNT when they ask how big the rip is.

When new officer Mike Ro finally accuses Dumars of stealing the money, the latter finally reveals the truth that he had been part of a mole hunt within the team this entire time. The reason he gave out different numbers to each member of his team is that he wanted to pinpoint which of them would ultimately spill the figure outside. So, when the threatening phone call mentions $150,000, a number only Ro is familiar with, it all becomes clear for Dumars.

As for Dumars’s previous offer to Baptiste and Salazar to steal the rip, it turns out that they already knew someone was overhearing them the entire time. Consequently, there was no crime stopper tip either; just a message from Jackie to Dumars the night she was murdered.

As the tables turn, Dumars now points fingers at Ro for using his burner phone to make the calls himself, although the latter insists he never had one to begin with. But Byrne chimes in and gives him a reality check. In case you’ve not guessed it, the clash between Dumars and Byrne was part of the plan, and when Ro intervened, Byrne palmed his burner phone. But then again, it’s not just Ro.

After being fed up with the deception, he redials, and Nix’s phone rings, revealing that he’s complicit in the $20million heist. They both killed Jackie to avoid suspicion before she could put the money as bait.
