The perfect movie for Sunday night: ‘Rush Hour’

Whenever the weekend inches closer, a routine sense of urgency creeps in about how to make the most of Sunday. After all, it’s the time-worn reminder of what awaits Monday. If you’re looking for answers on Netflix, then we have just the ultimate buddy comedy to end the weekend with: the 1998 Rush Hour.

Hollywood has made quite the eccentric choices over the decades. And bringing the legendary martial artist Jackie Chan for a comedy riot with stand-up professional Chris Tucker was definitely one that paid off.

If you’re looking to end Sunday on a riotously funny note that makes you forget the nightmares waiting to welcome you on D-Day with an M, get cosy with the buddy cop action film, the gags from which live rent-free in our minds. For those uninitiated, Rush Hour stars Chan and Tucker as Chief Inspector Lee and LAPD Detective James Carter.

The story starts in Hong Kong, where Lee attempts to track down the anonymous kingpin Juntao, but only finds Sang, a right-hand minion, who manages to escape. But having recovered the Chinese cultural treasures, he gifts those as a farewell present to his close friend and Chinese consul, Solon Han. But when Han settles in LA, Sang abducts his daughter.

Despite Han’s insistence on bringing Lee on board with the case, the FBI shows hesitance to have a foreign officer, fearing an international dispute. And to have Lee distracted and dismissed from the case, guess who’s assigned? A polar opposite, non-conformist LAPD officer, Carter.

While at its core, Rush Hour is about saving Han’s daughter, it’s not exactly an intense thriller that requires heavy commitment. It’s designed to make you laugh out loud, and this dynamic duo just doesn’t miss a beat. There’s also the nostalgia factor that kicks in every time you tune into the film.

In case you’re here for repeat viewing, Rush Hour just gets funnier with rewatches. If you want, you can make an easy marathon out of it, as Netflix has the entire movie collection on the platform. However, make sure you do it this Sunday, as the franchise is set to leave Netflix on October 1st. So, happy viewing!
