The only Netflix rom-com you need to watch on Christmas Day: ‘Champagne Problems’

Christmas and rom-coms have become the cultural power couple we didn’t know we needed. While we usually come to think of classics like Love Actually or The Holiday whenever December comes around, on Netflix, this Christmas Day belongs to Champagne Problems.

Directed by Mark Steven Johnson, Champagne Problems is a Netflix romantic comedy starring Minka Kelly and Tom Wozniczka, which hit the streaming shelves earlier in November.

For those still craving the Parisian vibes following Emily in Paris season five, Champagne Problems is your return ticket to the City of Lights.

In the Netflix rom-com, Kelly stars as Sydney Price, a budding executive who’s headed to Paris, just in time for Christmas, to secure the acquisition of a legacy champagne brand, Château Cassell. Upon landing in the City of Love, Sydney, however, opts for a breather from work. But her night out in Paris comes with the company of a charming stranger, Henri, with whom she has a chance encounter.

While the pair doesn’t take long to hit it off, Sydney’s solo Paris outing ultimately culminates in a night spent together. So far, it might seem like she’s living the life of a fairytale, right? Paris, Christmas lights, a stunning stranger, and of course, the sparks.

By the time it’s the next day, however, Sydney has anything but time on her hands for romance. Now, she means business, and all she cares about is finalising the deal. But as they say, love has a strange way of coming for you when you least expect it, and something similar seems to be in Sydney’s festive cards.

Once she reaches Château Cassell, Sydney is taken off guard by Henri’s presence. And believe it or not, so are we. But as it turns out, his presence at the venue is not exactly a meet-cute coincidence orchestrated by Cupid. Henri is actually the son of the champagne company’s founder, Hugo de Montalembert, but like Sydney, we’ve been too smitten to guess the connection.

It’s no wonder that Sydney had her sights set on the prize since her arrival: acquisition of Château Cassell. However, thanks to her burgeoning feelings and the intense state of competition with other potential buyers, striking the deal would certainly not be a walk in the park.

While Champagne Problems has made quite a buzz since landing on Netflix, for those seeking the sparky rom-com run this Christmas, Paris is where you need to be. If that too leaves you craving for more, maybe it’s a sign to live your own Christmas rom-com this year.
