The only movie you need to watch on Netflix right now: Cillian Murphy stuns in ‘Red Eye’
Imagine saving a cerebral thriller for a nice, comfy weekend only to receive the news that it’s vanishing next on Netflix. Sounds eerily familiar, right? That’s because Netflix has a thing for snatching what’s good from the streamer, and its eyes are now all set on Cillian Murphy’s 2005 movie, Red Eye.
Netflix subscribers need to strap in for the departure arc that awaits next week, starting Monday, September 1st. The time is ticking fast on a whole lot of cinematic gold, which unfortunately includes Wes Craven’s Red Eye.
Red Eye implores you to wonder just how much danger a charming stranger can hold. And exactly how many meet-cute impressions gone wrong would it take for people to realise that it’s best to keep away from strangers? The movie follows Lisa Reisert, a hotel manager, who’s coerced into an assassination plot targeting her client while mid-air on a red-eye flight.
The thriller movie mostly takes place in the air as the plot unravels in a claustrophobic setting. The helplessness benefits from the backdrop, and it doesn’t exactly help that Lisa’s father is abducted as insurance to carry out the job. While Lisa is introduced at an emotional kerb, Red Eye is quick to transform the audience’s response from sympathy to concern.
Craven gives the audience an aerial point of view in Red Eye. He does so intentionally to amplify the atmosphere of suspense. But even with the benefit of knowing it all, he manages to catch viewers off guard with the terrific transition in Murphy’s character, which grows from endearing and pleasing to a substantial hazard in the blink of an eye.
Red Eye shows a masterclass in character development. And even when it reveals, there plays a sense of suspicion that there might be more. The film is realistically gripping, and the tone leaves you enough space to breathe. However, the tension grows so strong by pigeonholing audiences in a confined place with no room for help; don’t be surprised if you’re at a loss for breath.
We understand that you may have saved this for a day far more relaxed than a workweek night. But since Red Eye will leave you with afterthoughts, it’s best to complete the binge before the weekend, just in case you would like to return before it completely vanishes from the streamer.
