The only anti-Valentine movie you need to watch this Saturday: ‘Heart Eyes’
Still sulking about spending another Valentine’s Day alone? Well, we have just the anti-Valentine movie for you on Netflix to make you feel better about yourself: the ultimate romantic comedy slasher movie, Heart Eyes.
Directed by Josh Ruben, the horror romance drama revolves around a serial killer known as the Heart Eyes Killer, or HEK, who targets couples on Valentine’s Day for a few years now.
Heart Eyes primarily follows two single co-workers, Ally, a marketer for a jewellery company, and Jay, an accomplished freelancer, as they are paired to develop a new ad campaign, after Ally’s first idea was rejected. While her initial concept was seen as rather insensitive in the light of the recent murders, when they both end up at a diner to seek some inspiration, the night turns for the worse.
It’s one thing to stay single on Valentine’s Day; it’s completely another thing to lock horns with the only person around you on the same day over each other’s views on love. But just when Ally thought the night couldn’t get any worse, her ex-boyfriend shows up with his new girlfriend, and without thinking twice, Ally kisses Jay.
Little does Ally know that her plan to make Collin jealous may have caught HEK’s eyes. And just as they return to her apartment, the serial killer launches an unexpected attack, mistaking the two for a real couple. While lovers can easily take bullets for their better half, imagine doing something similar for your co-worker whom you just met.
The situation ends badly for Jay, who’s wrongfully confined after being found with the killer’s mask and weapon. But the plot twists? They are far from over.
Although viewers have witnessed scorned exes and revenge plots, Heart Eyes takes the idea of anti-Valentine’s Day to a level above with the killer’s unadulterated hatred for public displays of affection.
Heart Eyes turns the entire premise of Valentine’s Day into a horror story, completely satisfying for everyone who finds the day nauseating, even the couples. Despite choosing the most common rom-com: two co-workers work together on Valentine’s Day, and filling the voids with their meet-cute moments, the film transforms into a high-stakes edge-of-your-seat thriller that leaves the protagonists running for their lives.
So, if you prefer to keep your distance from overpriced dinners and the intense pressure of finding a holi-date on Valentine’s Day, Heart Eyes is the only antidote you need to get you through February 14th.
