The old-school Mark Rylance mobster thriller storming Netflix

Amid all the flashy blockbusters and high-octane action, there’s something genuinely terrific about a good old-fashioned thriller replete with mobsters, moles, and murder. And that’s precisely what you will find in Graham Moore’s 2022 crime drama starring Mark Rylance, now available on Netflix.

The Outfit was added to the Netflix library recently, and it has already shot up the list of top ten films in the UK. Directed by Moore, the mastermind behind the Academy Award-winning screenplay for The Imitation Game (2014), this mobster drama is set in Chicago.

The film boasts an ensemble cast that brings Moore’s vision to life with remarkable intensity. Talented people like Zoey Deutch, Johnny Flynn, Dylan O’Brien, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Simon Russell Beale are joining Rylance.

The Outfit follows the story of Leonard Burling (Mark Rylance), a Saville Row tailor, running a shop frequented by a family of ruthless gangsters. As tensions rise amidst a gang war, Burling finds himself entangled in a web of danger and deceit. Determined to secure his freedom from the clutches of the mob, Burling has to navigate a world where trust is a luxury he can ill afford.

Receiving its premiere at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival, The Outfit has garnered widespread acclaim for its gripping story and stellar performances. Critics have praised Rylance’s portrayal of Burling, which is his first successful film as a lead. But despite all the adulation, Rylance, like most artists, couldn’t help but be critical of his own performance, “I still feel, as one probably always feels as an actor, that Steve McQueen could have played it better.” He told the Los Angeles Times.

With a solid 85 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, The Outfit has firmly established itself as a must-watch for fans of the genre. From costume design to cinematography, every aspect of The Outfit contributes to its immersive atmosphere.
