The Netflix documentary that promises to mess with your mind
If you’re someone who takes an interest in conspiracy theories and often spends scrolling endlessly through such reels online, this Netflix docu-series promises to mess with your mind within just three hours, MH370: The Plane that Disappeared.
For showbiz fans, the suffix may sound similar to the premise of the NBC supernatural drama Manifest. However, the documentary is actually rooted in a real-life incident that still raises several questions, sparking just as many conspiracy theories surrounding the tragic event.
Directed by Louise Malkinson, MH370: The Plane That Disappeared centres on the 2014 disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 on March 8th, which had 239 passengers and crew onboard. The aircraft commenced its routine red-eye from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, and shortly after take-off, it vanished from radar screens.
Netflix released the documentary in 2023, examining the unresolved mystery surrounding the happenings with a three-part documentary featuring a global community of family members, scientists, and investigative journalists.
The first episode of MH370: The Plane That Disappeared offers viewers a close look into the immediate days following the aircraft’s mysterious disappearance, uncovering the consequences of uncontrollable conspiracy theories and false accusations surrounding the event. Meanwhile, the second episode of the documentary sheds light on the incident that happened later that year, complicating the investigation of MH370’s disappearance.
In July 2014, another Malaysian Airlines aircraft was lost when a Russian missile allegedly shot down MH17, which was eventually confirmed by a team of international investigators, although Russia denied. The episode discusses how the likelihood of those two incidents taking place within such a short period was unlikely and how it fueled even more conspiracy theories.
The third episode of MH370: The Plane That Disappeared unpacks just how layered the answers to the mystery surrounding what actually happened to the aircraft are. Wreckage from the plane was eventually found after months of tireless search on the shore off the East African Coast, but the search for certain answers has still not come to a halt.
The Plane That Disappeared explores the reasons that still keep some journalists and family members doubtful of the real happenings. The documentary also emphasises why the search still matters more than a decade on.
So, in case you haven’t already watched or heard about the incident before, save some room in your watchlist for MH370: The Plane That Disappeared.
