‘The Mitchells vs the Machines 2’ is well underway from Netflix and Sony
Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation are revving the engine of The Mitchells vs the Machines for a proper comeback.
The sequel to the 2021 Oscar-nominated feature The Mitchells vs the Machines is well underway, with Guillermo Martinez and JP Sans signing to take over the director’s chair, which will serve as Martinez’s directorial debut (via Variety).
Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logeline, AKA the Molyneux sisters, have been roped in to write the screenplay. Production is anticipated to begin early in 2026.
As was the case with the original movie, Netflix has assumed the responsibility of distributing the sequel as part of its licensing agreement with Sony. However, this time around, the companies are planning a more in-depth creative collaboration for the second movie.
The first film was originally intended for a 2020 release by Sony Pictures, when the title was changed to Connected. However, after the COVID-19 setbacks, Netflix picked up The Mitchells vs the Machines with its original title for over $100million. The movie revolves around the titular family, who drive their eldest daughter, Katie, to a film school in California.
But on the way, they encounter a villainous AI called PAL, commandeering a horde of robots to launch a riot against humanity. While initially set out for a different goal, the Mitchells ultimately take it upon themselves to save the race. The Mitchells vs the Machines was a highly critically acclaimed movie, which went on to win eight Annie Awards and an Oscar nomination for ‘Best Animated Feature’.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are producing The Mitchells vs the Machines 2 via Lord Miller, while Kurt Albrecht is producing for Sony Pictures Animation. Rianda, who served as a co-writer and director for the original movie, is executive producing alongside Lord Miller’s Aditya Sood.
Maritnez began the 2019 Laika production, Missing Link, after being the head of story on The Mitchells vs the Machines. He was also attached to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and KPop Demon Hunters. The latter touched down on Netflix under a different output deal with Sony, which is now officially the most-watched movie on the streaming giant, and is currently in talks for a sequel.
Before co-directing The Bad Guys 2 alongside Pierre Perifel, Sans helmed several DreamWorks Animation movies, including Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and Trolls World Tour. But now that he’s coming back for more with The Mitchells vs the Machines 2, it’s no doubt that all eyes will be on the highly anticipated animated sequel.
