‘The Mask’: the Jim Carrey comedy climbing the Netflix charts

Not every superhero flick is about dead-serious showdowns between the evil and the good of the world. Some are just eccentric to the point that they leave you laughing out loud on the floor, as is the case with Jim Carrey’s iconic comedy flick, The Mask, currently streaming on Netflix.

Netflix brought the blast from the past earlier in October. And in the week dated October 6th to October 12th, the superhero laughter riot was spotted rising through the ranks on the most popular movies chart globally.

Having amassed 4.3million views alone this week, The Mask is currently ranked sixth as the top ten title in 21 countries. It’s safe to say that despite passing over three decades, the punchfest comedy has remained as timeless as it could be.

Once deemed as a weekend staple for the ‘90s kids, the 1994 movie stars Carrey as Stanley Ipkiss, an often-ridiculed bank teller living in Edge City. While bad days are like bread and butter for breakfast for him, after a particularly humiliating day at work, he stumbles upon an enchanted mask that’s practically an equivalent to the magic lamp.

But instead of unleashing a Genie who grants three life-changing wishes, this mask turns Ipkiss into a cartoonish, zoot-suited, green-faced character, which becomes an outlet for his repressed desires to shine through. Unlike Ipkiss, The Mask turns him into someone who’s supremely confident. Additionally, his powers allow him to magically transform everything cartoonishly around him. As a result, soon hell breaks loose in the city. Initially, The Mask goes on a chaotic streak to exact vengeance on those who have wronged him.

Following this, the cartoonish superhero goes above and beyond to pursue the girlfriend of a local but dangerous gangster, who is also a nightclub singer, Tina Carlyle. Cameron Diaz portrays Tina in The Mask, which serves as her big-screen debut. While she steals the show with her charisma, cementing her presence in the film industry, Carrey takes the cake with his comic sense, physical and verbal comedy that hits home even after a thousand re-watches.

The Mask is one of the cultural cornerstones of Hollywood that defined Carrey’s reputation in Hollywood, as the often-associated film that stayed with the audience. Hence, it’s no wonder that its arrival on Netflix is being celebrated with its induction on the most popular movies chart globally. But this is only the start for its streaming footprint, having made twice the waves in the box office back in the day during its release.

In case you’re a first-time watcher, don’t let the timeline fool you. If a movie stands tall to the reputation that old is gold, it has to be The Mask.
