The major titles leaving Netflix in January

With the start of the new year well underway, Netflix has announced which shows and films will be leaving its platform in January 2025.

As many people look to start fresh at the turn of the year and begin again with a clean slate, the streaming giants have also decided to have a clearout to mark the end of 2024. As a result, a number of high profile series and popular flicks will cease to be available at some point this month.

The first title to leave the platform this month is the Saw horror film franchise’s eighth entry, Jigsaw, which was released in 2017 and became unavailable on New Year’s Day. The film’s release came as a surprise to many fans of the franchise since 2010’s Saw 3D had previously been announced as the final entry in the series, although mixed opinions on the film were enough to convince Netflix to pull it from their service.

A surprising removal from the platform is the 2015 crime thriller Focus, which was only introduced to the platform in November 2024, and instantly found its way to becoming one of the most popular movies on the site in its first month. The film, which stars Will Smith and Margot Robbie as a con artist and his former lover and protégé respectively, will cease to be available from January 9th.

Joining the other films in the bin will be the CGI-animated remake of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Cats, which was released in 2019 to widespread negative reviews. While it found something of an ironic popularity among viewers, its days on the site are numbered, with it no longer available to view after January 15th.

More popular films will be getting axed from Netflix this month, including Selma, the critically acclaimed biopic about Martin Luther King’s march to Montgomery, which will also be removed on January 15th. It will be followed by the removal of cult horror film The Babadook on January 25th, and the Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum cop comedy films 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street on the last day of the month.

Among some of the series that will be leaving the platform are all five seasons of The Magicians, as well as all eight seasons of detective show Monk on January 14th, while seasons one to five of New Amsterdam will leave the site a day later.
