The link between ‘Remarkably Bright Creatures’ and ‘Spider-Man’
Star power has always undoubtedly been one of the strongest suits of Netflix, and the upcoming movie adaptation of Shelby Van Pelt’s Remarkably Bright Creatures brings proof.
While the buzz surrounding Remarkably Bright Creatures has only been increasing by the minute, what we know is that it is not without reason.
Netflix recently rolled out the highly anticipated teaser of the movie, which begins with the narrator saying, “Humans, for the most part, are dull and blundering. But occasionally, you can be remarkably bright creatures.” Although readers of the book are already aware that the narrator is not actually a human, for those new to the block, it is a giant Pacific octopus named Marcellus who develops an unexpected bond with the cleaning lady at the aquarium where it is housed.
That may or may not be surprising, but did you know that the octopus in Remarkably Bright Creatures is actually voiced by the actor who, ironically, also portrayed the most unforgettable Spider-Man villain, Doctor Octopus?
That’s right! Tudum just revealed that Alfred Molina is voicing Marcellus in Remarkably Bright Creatures, and this might just be the next big thing on Netflix.
Directed by Olivia Newman, Remarkably Bright Creatures tells the story of Tova, a desolate widow, who finds light again in her life when she unexpectedly befriends a giant Pacific octopus at the aquarium where she works alongside another young man, Cameron, who arrives in town searching for his family. Together, they pull back the curtains on a mystery, leading them to a life-altering discovery that rekindles their sense of wonder.
In a conversation with Netflix, Van Pelt revealed that the idea for Marcellus came to her from a YouTube rabbit hole and a fiction-writing exercise, which culminated in the conceptualisation of a genius octopus in captivity. Then, she built her human characters around Marcellus, which, in turn, grounded her story in the real world.
Just in case you were unaware, the character Tova is actually inspired by Van Pelt’s own maternal grandmother, whereas Cameron is inspired by events from the author’s life.
While the choice of cast so far was appealing enough, with Molina joining the ensemble, albeit behind-the-scenes, Remarkably Bright Creatures is shaping up to be a must-watch on Netflix. So, save the date for May 8th because skipping this adaptation is not even an option to begin with.
