The Kevin Costner thriller that has been resurrected on Netflix

During the 1980s and 1990s, Kevin Costner was an acting powerhouse, starring in 33 films in just two decades. Costner is known for films such as The Bodyguard, Man of Steel, and Robin Hood: A Prince of Thieves. Today, however, he is probably most known for his role in Yellowstone, a TV series which generated an average of 7.83 million viewers per episode in its fourth season.

Though his days of being the main star in action movies are profoundly over, his previous films are seeing unexpected success on Netflix. Similar to his 2006 film The Guardian, Mr. Brooks starring Costner and Demi Moore has also climbed Netflix charts, proving that once again subscribers can easily influence films on Netflix more than its ratings can.

Receiving a mediocre rating of 55% from Rotten Tomatoes and a slightly better 7.3 from IMDB, the film was released in 2007 and didn’t particularly impress film critics and audiences at the time. Mr. Brooks focussed on a businessman named Earl Brooks, played by Costner, who battles with his split personality that encourages him to give way to his murdering needs. Brooks resorts to plotting one more murder but ends up being blackmailed. Although it has an interesting plot and star cast, it didn’t do massively well at box office. With a budget of $20 million, it made $48.1 million back – somehow, it’s not likely for this movie to get on the top grossing films of all time lists.

In an interview, Costner said, “I thought it could be a classic, because the writing was great, the writing was the star of the movie, and I thought that while I didn’t see myself as that person, I could play this role, it was a challenge. I understood that it would be seen as a departure for me,”

Adding: “I understood all the things that would come with it, but I still feel that if I’m going to continue to have a life, making movies, then I should try to make different kind of films. And this seemed to fit in a positive way.”

According to FlixPatrol, the film has reached the Top 10 most watched in several different countries, including Jamaica, Mexico, and the Bahamas. Quite impressive for a film that’s about 15 years old.
