The action-adventure comedy film Sonic the Hedgehog 2, starring Jim Carrey, has stormed into the global Netflix top ten films list this week.
Claiming the fifth spot on the chart, this blockbuster, directed by Jeff Fowler and written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, has captured the hearts of audiences in 20 countries, from Argentina to Australia.
The film, released on April 8th, 2022, in the USA, continues the story of Sonic, voiced by Ben Schwartz, who is determined to prove himself as a true hero after settling in Green Hills. Sonic faces a new challenge when the notorious Dr Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey, returns with a formidable partner, Knuckles the Echidna, portrayed by the talented Idris Elba. Together, they seek a mystical emerald with the power to destroy civilisations.
The star-studded cast included James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Lee Majdoub, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, and Shemar Moore. The film follows Sonic’s globe-trotting journey alongside his trusty sidekick, Tails, as they race against time to find the Master Emerald before it falls into the wrong hands, aka Dr. Robotnik’s.
Speaking of the very physical performance Carrey had to deliver for the role, he told People magazine in his own philosophical way, “I throw the spaghetti against the wall, see if it sticks, see if it’s al dente. I know the material, and then, of course, I want to try it a bunch of different ways. Give the director so much to work with, so many levels of emotion, so many levels of cartoon. I’ll do them all night if they let me.”
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 builds upon the success of its predecessor, setting box office records and receiving mixed but generally positive reviews. Critics lauded its action sequences, humour, and performances while offering constructive criticism for the screenplay, runtime, and pacing.
