Netflix’s current lineup of top ten films in the US features a crime drama starring the Supernatural and The Walking Dead star Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
The Postcard Killings, a 2020 crime film directed by Danis Tanović, has secured the seventh spot on the streaming giant’s top ten films list in the US, Starring Morgan, Famke Janssen, and Cush Jumbo, among others. The film is based on the 2010 novel The Postcard Killers by James Patterson and Liza Marklund.
The story revolves around Jacob Kanon (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a New York detective investigating the brutal murder of his daughter during her honeymoon in London. As he unravels a pattern of similar crimes across Europe targeting honeymooning couples, he teams up with American journalist Dessie Lombard (Cush Jumbo) in pursuit of the elusive killer.
While the premise promises suspense and intrigue, the critical reception suggests The Postcard Killings falls short of expectations. It is the ideal watch if you wish to only partially engage with what is happening on-screen. However, it is still a surprising dud from Tanović, who has won the Academy Award and a Golden Globe for ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ for the Bosnian war drama No Man’s Land.
The Postcard Killings struggles to live up to its potential as a gripping crime thriller. As Dennis Harvey of Variety wrote, “This uninspired detour into impersonally commercial English-language terrain for Bosnian director Danis Tanovic should provide Patterson’s fans and undemanding miscellaneous viewers with an acceptably slick if not-particularly-suspenseful crime potboiler for home viewing.”
You might be better off getting your introduction to Tanović through any of his other films, including An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker or Death in Sarajevo, both of which earned him Silver Bears at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2013 and 2016.
