‘The Investigation of Lucy Letby’: Where is Lucy Letby now?
Netflix recently released a chilling true crime documentary, The Investigation of Lucy Letby, which recounts the horrific crimes of the former neonatal nurse, her eventual arrest, and subsequent investigation and trial.
In 2018, Lucy Letby made headlines due to her undisputed streak of notoriety, which Netflix revisits through never-before-seen footage as well as interviews with investigators, a friend of Letby, and one of the victims’ parents.
Although The Investigation of Lucy Letby sparked outrage from her parents, who alleged invasion of privacy before the documentary could even be released on Netflix, the controversies and backlash have had no shortcomings in the docu-film’s popularity. In fact, the controversies contributed to its exposure, which is why it’s no surprise that it’s currently the most-talked-about offering from Netflix.
Now, before we address the question of where Lucy Letby is, viewers might want to know who she is. So, for those unaware, Letby is a former neonatal nurse convicted of murdering seven babies and also convicted of attempting to murder seven more at Countess of Chester Hospital in Chester, England. She worked in the neonatal intensive care unit from 2015 to 2016.
According to her ex-co-workers, Letby seemed like a shy, reserved, and very hardworking nurse when she first joined Countess of Chester Hospital in 2012. By 2015 spring, she was promoted to work in neonatal intensive care, but it wasn’t long after her qualification that consulting doctors sensed something definitely didn’t sit right. Within two weeks, three babies succumbed to sudden, unexpected medical events.
Doctors weren’t initially sure about what was going on. However, when the cases began piling up, and no medical explanation could be found, the incidents were reported to the hospital’s risk management team and the director of nursing. After an internal investigation, it was found that only Letby was consistently present during the dates, and it was only after she moved out of the neonatal unit that the deaths finally stopped.
Cheshire police put the handcuffs on Letby in 2018, and she was eventually charged in 2020. She pleaded not guilty to all 22 counts, and her first trial began in 2022. A year later, Letby was found guilty on 14 of 22 counts, resulting in 14 life sentences. The jury absolved Letby of two additional counts of attempted murder, having been unable to determine a verdict on six more charges.
Despite that, Letby’s parents and her friend interviewed in The Investigation of Lucy Letby have maintained her innocence. In 2024, she tried to appeal her verdict, and the outcome was that she was convicted of an additional attempt to murder charge.
As of now, Letby is serving 15 life sentences in prison while waiting for the Criminal Cases Review Commission to review her case. After the review is complete, she could be given another chance to appeal.
